Earlier this week, disgraced former Allentown Mayor Edwin "Fed Ed" Pawlowski and his wife Lisa started a a GoFundMe page to help with their legal expenses. They raised $2,380 as of last night. The link to the page is gone. Many people were very upset at Pawlowski's sense of self-entitlement. That little trick may have earned him an extra year, especially since it displays defiance instead of remorse.
I was not going to ask for predictions, but i think he's earned this attention. I say his minimum sentence will be 10-12 years. What's your guess? The person who comes closest gets to decide what charity is worthy of the $115 I raised on my parody GoFundMe page.

ReplyDeleteI've always felt that he would get 10 years and then be out within 2-3 on service and good behavior. You can bet that he has a bunch of advisers counseling him on how to make the best impression and minimize his stay. Expect him to apply his Moody's Bible College background towards some kind of spiritual counseling gig or something like that. I may be way off, but I fully expect to see him back in action by 2022 or so.
ReplyDeleteSHOULD be 8-12 years. I read someplace with federal crimes, a minimum of 90% of the sentence must be served before any chance of parole. If true, sounds like he'll be locked-up for about 7.5 years. That should be a pretty rough stretch for someone like Pawlowski who is likely to pizz off a few fellow inmates along the way.

47 corruption counts. Sentencing guidelines by U.S.Office of Probation and Pretrial services suggest 30 - 600 years behind bars. The judge can use discretion, however, and Ed has a good, convincing lawyer. Federal guidelines mandate that Ed serve 85% of his sentence behind bars. I'm thinking 6 months for each count = 23.5 years, and if the judge drops a few charges from the calculation that's 20 years. Maybe he can serve a bunch of these charges concurrently? I'm going to go with 15 years minimum.

ReplyDeleteHere's the reasoning. The Morning Call reported hints of Pawlowski's shenanigans, but did not uncover the full story. Some allege with no evidence that TMC wasn't interested, or was in bed with him. I have another theory. The Morning Call failed to uncover this because they don't have the resources to do investigative reporting anymore. As you know, investigations are time-intensive, and may result in no story for days, weeks, or ever. TMC has to publish every day so they have to focus on "low-hanging fruit" which is day-to-day news -- stories they can begin with the knowledge that they'll have something to publish the same day. The loss of investigative watchdog journalism is a major loss for accountability and transparency. You and other non-profit news sites are working to fill the void. The Institute for Non-profit news is supporting their important work.
I think it will be 5 to 7 years, possibly out in 3. The reason I say this is that while his actions were abhorrent, he wasn't personally enriching himself by buying fancy cars and vacations and whatnot. Sure, his schemes were tied to his campaign, but I think in a lot of these other cases, there was another element involved that is absent in this one.

White has rarely considered the over all overall impact on the city which will last for decades. White has never considered the impact on the individuals who were victimized. The institutional harm was immense, the individual harm should not be glossed over. This was NOT a victimless crime spree!
Look for the Morning Call to continue to minimalize the entire episode, up to and through the sentencing phase .
The newspaper is a textbook study in failed and compromised journalism.

ReplyDeleteThe vulgar comment is not necessarily violent. Many lasting, passionate relationships are forged in common experience of prison. Ed's always made the best of tough situations. He'll likely do the same in the big house. I've not donated to Ed and Lisa's Go Fund Me request. If I donate at all, I'll do so to Moody Bible Institute in their names.

Wouldn't some sort of monetary compensation to tax payers be more appropriate then taxpayers spending another $30,000+ a year to incarcerate him?
May I suggest he be instead forced to get a "real" job like selling door-to-door or work at Amazon till his debt to society is paid? Maybe tack on a additional number of hours working weekly at some homeless shelter he failed to have the city help fund?
If Ed is an exemplary inmate he can get 54 days a year reduction in his sentence after serving the initial year with no “good time”.

ReplyDeleteLVCI, No one person is absolutely good or absolutely evil. I must admit I like the idea of giving him a sentence that spares taxpayers the cost of incarceration while impressing the severity of the offense on Fed Ed, and giving him something to reflect upon.

He could do that, or help in a soup kitchen or even help people, provided he have no leadership role and that there be no connection to anyone here in the LV. Also, the sentence should attach any profits he gets from book sales.
But he's going to jail.

ReplyDeleteDon't think there's anything hypocritical about my decision to allow that comment to stand. If it advocated violence against Fed Ed, or suggested he kill himself, I'd delete it. But it did not. It just plainly stated the obvious - prison is a violent place, and perhaps Fed Ed should have considered that before insisting on a trial. It's vulgar, but I'll allow it to stand. Now my decisions concerning comments are made by me and me alone. there is no appeal. There is no special committee to review it. ReplyDeleteReading everyone's guesses on Fed Ed's sentencing lengths, they seem very low. Fed Ed's convictions of conspiracy, lying to the FBI and one of his bribery convictions each carries a five-year maximum prison sentence. Each of his remaining bribery convictions carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Each of his remaining convictions of mail fraud and wire fraud carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence.
ReplyDeleteScott Allinson got 27 months for each count of bribery and conspiracy.
I am guessing at minimum it will be at least 30-40 years, and that's on the low side. The judge, having full discretion for the sentencing,will take into account that Fed Ed has not been remorseful. Fed Ed also refused to resign from office of Mayor until March 9, 2018, after he was found guilty, even though he was indicted in July 2017. Legally he did not have to step down until after sentencing, however he should have but he continued to think he did nothing wrong. Judge Sanchez also stated at Allinson's sentencing that if you engage in pay to play that you risk your freedom, and that the punishment must send a strong and powerful message.
The former mayor is still delusional. At his Face Book page, he describes "how to write a letter" to the judge before sentencing. Then, he states, make sure to send to McMahon, not the judge. This no doubt so that only letters in his favor reach the judge.
ReplyDeleteMy letter went directly to Judge Sanchez and in it my letter points to the fact that the ex mayor show no remorse, and that other politicians need to be sent a message.
On that basis alone I feel that ten years is about right. And please spare me that he did not benefit monetarily in some way.
