Fed Ed: "So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish"

I said I'd believe it when I saw it, and I saw it ... at least on video. Yesterday afternoon, a "disappointed" and  "saddened" Edwin "Fed Ed" Pawlowski announced from the stoop of his 11th Street home that he was stepping down as Allentown's mayor. He was surrounded by men and women holding bibles. When he finished speaking, he declined to take any questions, which more or less has been his modus operandi for the past 12 years. Instead he returned to his mancave while his flamboyant attorney, Jack McMahon, parried with the press. Here are my observations.

1) No remorse. - Although Fed.Ed was "so very sorry that you and the City had to endure this long, drawn-out saga," he said nothing that hinted at the slightest remorse or acceptance of responsibility. Instead, he vowed to appeal his sentence as his factotums applauded. He's portraying himself, and not Allentown's citizenry, as the victim.

2) With one exception, no Democratic leaders joined Fed Ed. Most of the people I saw are the same ones who stood by him in July, when he was first indicted. I was at that news conference, and remember them telling me then to wait for the verdict. Well, the verdict is in. One fellow leery of the crowd began taking pictures of the Fed Ed detractors.

3) Congressional candidate Rick Daugherty joined and supported Fed Ed. - He even applauded Pawlowski several times. He apparently thinks this will help his chances and that people will flock to a campaign that endorses political corruption. "Bernie, I support the legal system," he explained. "In all my dealings with Ed I never saw anything illegal, not even a hint of anything illegal. The appeals process is part of that legal system." This is something you should consider when you vote in the primary. Daugherty has sided with political corruption.

4) Jack McMahon is a noble man. -  I've seen McMahon handle several criminal cases in Northampton County. I've told you that when the money is gone, so is he. But this lugubrious lawyer is standing by Fed Ed even though the Allentown Mayor is now impecunious. McMahon said he would defend Fed Ed to the end. He also said that when Pawlowski was first charged, but I expected him to be gone by now. I was wrong. His decision to stand by the now guilty Mayor may be difficult for some of you to understand, but to me, it demonstrates a great deal of personal integrity. We are all lucky that lawyers like McMahon are still out there. Since I am firmly convinced that Fed Ed is guilty as hell, I would want him to have the best possible representation. He has it.

  6. It’s official!
For at least the rest of today, Ed Pawlowski is Pennsylvania’s ZOMBIE Mayor.

  7. If an election was held tomorrow, Fed Ed would win handily. That's why Allentown deserves every bad thing that happens to it. Enjoy your paradise, you morons.

  8. Bernie - I thought I saw you in the Call picture this morning. Must have been your doppelganger.

  9. Absolutely NO REMORSE! Now this stupid Bast--- is showing the federal judge he has no remorse and would do it again. Here is a psychotic individual with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Do not take responsibility, it is always somebody's else fault. That will look really good on his pre-sentence report!

By staying to Friday, 5:00 p.m., he can receive another weekly paycheck from the suckers of Allentown.

I personally know Mr. McMahon from a Philadelphia connection and know he is not a very benevolent person. As attorney for the mob, he stuck numerous underworld figures with large bills and did basically nothing. Granted, he does have star quality court presence, however, he tends to piss off a lot of people, diminishing his record in courtroom successes. I'm sure he will do an excellent job on the appeal, how else will he get paid by the dishonorable one.

  11. To the points in your post:

    1) I agree with you 100% that there was no remorse from Pawlowski, or (as you note) acceptance of responsibility.

    2) Not surprised that most politicians stayed away. As a general rule, politicians only want to be at happy occasions like ribbon-cuttings when a business opens, but will be nowhere to be found when that business closes. I certainly wouldn't expect the cabal of Democrat elected officials who cozied up to Ed (when it was good for them to do so) to remind people of those ties now that he's been found guilty. After all, they were likely aware of what was going on, but happy when the results were going their way. The ends justifies the means (any means) to those people.

    3) Surprising about Daugherty. Never thought he was a particularly great candidate in any of his races, but I thought better of him. If he didn't know what was going on in City Hall, or thinks that what we learned from the trial is in any way acceptable, Daugherty doesn't deserve to be elected to any office. Disappointing, to say the least.

    4) Couldn't disagree more about McMahon. I don't think his theatrics and courtroom presentation scored any points with jurors and likely turned many off. At yesterday's news conference, he was the bully Pawlowski couldn't be as he insulted reporters who were asking legitimate (albeit uncomfortable) questions about why Pawlowski resigned or even ran for mayor again. He certainly dodged the question about whether he was being paid by some outside party to continue with Pawlowski's appeals. Given the rumors that the FBI tried to get Pawlowski to roll on others higher up in Philadelphia's Democrat machine, I wouldn't be surprised if some Philly money will be paying Pawlowski's legal bills going forward.

  12. So Mr. Daugherty is BLIND. I don't like to see that in public. I'll remember this when I vote for someone, anyone else. Even Pawlowski's attorney complimented the jury - as well as the prosecution. A blind fool. Thank you so much for pointing this out Bernie.

No, there was not a hint of remorse in Pawlowski. If anything, he implied that it is the prosecution's fault that the public had to endure the trial - when it was his.

  14. What are the chances that Ed pulls a Budd Dywer today as he ends his "career" as mayor?

  15. 9:14, McMahon may have made a mistake in constantly replaying recordings during the trial, and that did bother one juror. But I was very impressed at his skill. I loved his cross of Ruchlewicz even though he was replaying those recordings. I love the way he refused to let the judge push him around a trial.A judge will try to intimidate lawyers, and if he succeeds, that lawyer is worthless. McMahon also did a good job of humanizing an unlikable person. As for arguing with a reporter, the reporter was Bo Koldcock, and he was both argumentative and asking stupid questions. McMahon handled him deftly. I notice no reporter rushed to Bo's defense.

Up until yesterday, I though McMahon was all about the money. Good, but a mercenary. I had him wrong. He is zealously representing his client within the bounds of the law, and is acting in the highest tradition of his profession. People like me, who have been disciplined, give lawyers a bad name. But most of the lawyers I know have a deep sense of personal integrity. McMahon is one such lawyer.

You are certainly welcome to argue the opposite.

  20. If Ed and Jack are going to continue staging this type of public event Ed is going to have to get a referral from Jack to his taylor.
Ed just can’t keep wearing Soviet vintage fashion with those Bush era politico neck ties.
    It’s not an appealing look.

  40. To the alcoholic Trump supporter who is always attacking a judge and his family: get some help. Your comments have a shelf life of about 30 seconds. You have already pussied out of a meeting with some of the baseball people you slam. So you are a coward and prove that even more by failing to identify yourself. If you continue, I am going to file a complaint with New Jersey police.
