Guardian's "Women Are Pissed" Looks at NorCo

An excellent British newspaper, the Guardian, has been doing a series it calls The Promise. After voting twice for Barack Obama, the county went red in 2016 and voted for Donald Trump. This series explains what happened and periodically asks whether the enthusiasm for a New York billionaire who claims to speak for blue collar workers. The latest story, "Women are Pissed," asserts that "doubts have grown locally about whether Trump could win the county again, which could have implications for his national staying power. And women are at the center of the story." The women featured include incoming NorCo Council members Peg Ferraro, Tara Zrinski and Lori Vargo Heffner. Zrinski and Heffner never held office before.

Tara Zrinski: We Need More Women in Office

“There were people who, when I knocked on a door, said, ‘You’re a woman, I’m voting for you, we need more women in office’,” said Zrinksi, a first-time candidate. “And I heard that theme a lot.”

Lori Vargo Heffner: What's For Supper?

“[W]hen I get done with a campaign event, I still have to go home and do the laundry. I walk in and my dad goes, ‘What’s for supper?’ I’m still expected to have those traditional roles, beyond my workday. Whereas I know that my colleagues who are male had wives to support them and be home for them, and their wives were at the events with them.

“I don’t want to demean my male colleagues. People just have different expectations of women, I think.”

Peg Ferraro: Women Have Come Into Their Own

“I just do not appreciate the gender thing,” Ferraro said in a phone interview. “I think if they’re qualified, we all have to be judged equally. I think sometimes the perception is that women are a little bit more caring, women are a little bit more honest, trustworthy. But that was years ago, when I ran the first time. We’re talking the 80s.

“At this day and age, I think that women have come into their own enough that I’m hoping that we can be looked at for our competence, and our skills – for what we bring to the table. Not just because we’re a women.”

In the meantime, Authoritarian Donald Trump managed to kill two birds with one stone yesterday. At a ceremony ostensibly honoring the Navajo code talkers who foiled the Japanese during WWII, he inexplicably referred to US Senator Elizabeth Warren as Pocohontas. he managed to insult native Americans and women in one fell swoop.

"But do you know what? I like you," he said to the code talkers.

Afterwords, the code talkers sent a few messages.

"Bilagáana t'óó hodiilzha' "(Ditsy Anglo), said one.

"Ahályání!" (Idiot!), said the other.

Interestingly, in a display of Trump's  typical insensitivity, the ceremony was conducted under a portrait of Andrew Jackson, whose nickname was "Indian Killer." In 1830, he signed the Indian Removal Act that relocated 60,000 native Americans away from the Southeast US. It is believed that 15,000 died along the way.

  2. Sorry but this Zirinski and Hefner sound like they want a pity party. I will withhold judgment until I see them in action. Zirinski sounds like a spoiled child and Hefner sounds like an angry old woman. Heard a Zirinski rant online. She seems to think she was elected to the US senate. Time to deal with reality. She made fun of the current council calling them boring and that she was going to change things up. That should be fun.

If it is such a burden don't run for office. No one twisted their arms.

  3. The current Council is fairly boring and lazy. That is the reality. Geissinger and Vaughn should never have run bc their attendance sucked. They did absolutely nothing. Mat “Benedict Arnold” Benol switched his vote on a home rule charter study bc going with Brown was more important than following his conscience. I do feel bad for Hayden Phillips. It is far too early for me to weigh in on this new council. I am willing to wait and see.

  6. Trump once again saying something stupid and insulting, what else is new. Some people find him refreshing. I as many others find him a tactless fool making a mockery of the US and the office of the Presidency.
Has any man of any party in modern American history ever been as classless and crass as this buffoon?

    God he is awful.

Whule men and women are risking their lives to defend our freedom, this guy takes a knee on everything that is good about America. As the great Ann Richards once said.. He was bbqnorne on third base and thought he hit a triple. Who would have guessed she was talking about trump.

  10. The more Trump calls out Pocohantus the better. She is a sitting US Senator who lied on her Harvard application by saying she was native american. She should have resigned in disgrace. But I see you love backing liars when it suits your twisted narrative

You should try applying for some jobs this way. Check off "female" and check off "native american" and see if you get any calls.

You bitch more than any woman alive, and yes, you need a job. You could easily explain your lies.

  11. Warren claims to be the first woman of color at Harvard. Please. Where's the outrage at her deception and cultural appropriation? Trump is an asshole. But Warren is also an asshole. There are many reasons to hate politics. These are two of them. The Pocahontas line is funny for two reasons: 1) it annoys the shit out of the left and calls a phony a phony, 2) Trump is too stupid to understand it's actually "Fauxcahontas." The setting for the joke is as ill-timed as anything Trump regularly does. At least he didn't ask a legless war veteran to stand up and take a bow.

It wouldn't surprise me if the idiot asks one to stand up next to him for a photo op.
Jackson and Trump have one similarity. Making money being President. Trump makes money staying at his own resort that bills the government. Jackson made it by purchasing much of the same land he dragged the Native Americans off of.

  18. Pennsylvania's congressional delegation is a historical embarrassment given its dearth of women over the last 25 years: Melissa hart (R) Alysson Schwartz(D). We are near the bottom. Utterly unacceptable. There should be a rush to push Lisa Boscola to run for the 15th with the hope the Courts knock down the gerrymander. And even if they do not. Lisa needs to run> Lisa will win.

A woman running for District Attorney is over due.

It's only a matter of time before there is bipartisan women majority on county council. However we need more Jane Bakers, Jane Ervins especially in Northampton County.

Watch McClure selection of county department heads. Last time there were 3--the historical high mark of female Norco leadershi--was 1999 almost 20 years ago (Corkhill, Lewis, Marakovits).

History demands a changing of the guard....

  19. It’ll be no time at all before Drumpf calls for an entire race to be gathered and placed in internment camps. Then, and only then, will he achieve the status of Democratic Party God, FDR. Democrats like Bernie certainly know how to spot a racist. He and his party have been championing racists for generations. And yeah, John Conyers is cool because ... racism and all of that ....

You post as an experienced Troll. Turn Trump's racism into a review of ancient history. Post about the present actions of a turd who thinks a wall is an answer to illegal immigration, insults Native Americans, the handicapped, women, POW's, our allies, ad nauseum.
He will, without a doubt, be remembered as the worst President - EVER. The reviews will only get worse as time passes.

The use of the word "Redskins" to refer to this football team is descriptive, not pejorative. I would prefer that the name be changed because some native Americans are offended by its use. The use of the word "Pocohontas" to refer to a female member of the United States Senate is clearly pejorative, diminishing both her sex and native Americans. This behavior is indefensible.

  24. "Democrats like Bernie certainly know how to spot a racist. He and his party have been championing racists for generations."

I have hardly been sponsoring racists for generations, and am highly critical of Jefferson (a snake and back-stabber), Jackson (an Indian killer), and Woodrow Wilson (bigot). The most outrageous of them was Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's VP. When the Ku Klux Klan rose in the south, he enabled that group and downplayed reports that they were murdering blacks and white northerners who came down to teach. He interfered in black voting and was without dispute the most racist of all Presidents.

I know you fancy yourself a mind reader, but I never heard of that series until you posted here.

So I sampled some of those "supportive" articles.

“Miller, 79, a Democrat and the former mayor of Bangor, Pennsylvania, has not been impressed by Trump”

“Trump’s losing support because of his, of the complete stupidity – you know, maybe we should give him an IQ test with others,”

“There is a sense of regret.”

“For many people who follow US politics from the coasts or overseas, Trump’s presidency can seem like a string of endless scandals.”

But, for the Grauniad, I guess that passes as high praise.

  38. I find it fascinating that the Trump loyalists are so fanatical. They will even go as far as say they would support a pedophile over a democrat in Alabama. I think that sums up the sad state of affairs we find ourselves in.

The culture war has been so hyped and promoted by the right wing that it has successfully kept peoples eyes off of the economic war that big money interests have waged on America since the 1980's. The new "tax plan" is another example of how the republican big wigs have people so focused on who uses which toilet they take their eye off the fact that once again they will be screwed by the upper crust.

  43. 12:19, Contrary to what you seem to think, a piece can be very complimentary while including some criticism. This series has spent quite a bit of time talking to and writing about Trump supporters. In fact, there were also one or two videos.

  44. It is funny in a twisted way Bernie that the same folks that criticize the dumb move of democrats re-electing Pawlowski or any democrat regardless of how bad, are oblivious to the hypocrisy of areas of the country like Alabama that would vote for a pedophile over a democrat. I would say fanatical idiocy is a bipartisan problem.

Maybe it is time to reinstitute the fairness doctrine in broadcasting.

  46. 319...resources today and the internet provide access to research that was not available a decade ago. Warren said her view of ancestory were first learned and passed down from grandparents and relatives. Did you doubt your fra dpare ts. Who is to say they were right or wrong.

    HOWEVER, this is about our
Unstable President. Tbe same President that once said he was of Swedish descent when he wanted to sell condos and rent apartments to members of the Jewish community despite his German ancestry. Later in life he boasted his German heritage. Just one more example of Executive hypocricy and how he will say and do anything to get his way. Executive Hypocrisy.

  47. A blood test for DNA is very accurate and not, the spit in the tube tests. Also, historical records can prove if, your native American. Records also, prove that she is 100% Caucasian.
