NorCo DCED Department Moving to Human Services Building

Diane Donaher and John Brown
Northampton County's Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is moving. Deputy Administrator Cathy Allen informed Council's Finance Committee on April 20 that the Department, headed by Diane Donaher, will be moving to the County's Human Services building this Summer. No permission is needed for this change, but Allen said that she was informing Council in an effort at transparency.

During the 2013 Executive race, Democrat John Callahan complained that the County's economic development office is located "in the bowels of Northampton County," next to the jail's bullpen. He wondered how that is supposed to attract investment.

Brown apparently agrees.

  1. This half a county government building never made any sense. Either it should have been a county government center or not built at all. Talk about trophies to egos and plaques with your names on them.

Of course all at the taxpayers expense.

  2. That department should be hidden away. It is useless. The only jobs DCED has created are within their own department. Now they will hide in a corner of the HS building where their insignificance will no longer be under the nose of the executive staff. Just moving the Clue (rather Clueless) pieces around the board.

  3. The employees will get a raise since they no longer have to pay the Panto tax.

  4. This is the older part of the building and makes far more sense than the monstrosity built by Freedberg and Moran. The DCED is part of what was once half of the law library. The DCED never belonged where it is, near Courtroom 1 next to the bullpen. But I don't like it moving to Human Services. It signals to me a move away from human services clients. I would stick them in the Milides building, and would kick out the daily newspapers, who are provided offices for free even though the ET in particular no longer can provide the most basic coverage. We should not be subsidizing newspapers who don't do their job anyway.

  5. I agree about moving them to the Militas building. It has been half empty since the county bought it. However, renovations would be costly and Brown is tight with a buck. At least when the Bucks do not go in his cronies' pockets. But the HS building is an odd choice. There is room in the southwest corner of the building, which is presumably where they will go. Their staff is bloated and parking is already at near capacity. It is an odd pairing of county functions. Wasn't there some talk of DCED moving into the Louise Moore farmhouse? That may have been a better move, although the Parks office should be there.

  7. What does that mean? Sounds like they still have no idea what to do with it.

  8. County DCED is useless anyway. Who cares where it goes? Bloated department full of consultants who count beans all day long instead of doing anything..something! communities are starving and Diane and her friends eat cake.

  9. Hear Donchez is looking to hire Diane back into DCED in Bethlehem. That will make Karner look good.

  10. If Donaher goes, good riddance. But don't stop there. Eliminate some other positions like the useless recycling guy.
