Vive la France at Sportsfest!


ABC, a team from France, is one of the entries in this year's A-town Throwdown at Sportsfest. I was thrilled to be able to speak to some of the players yesterday and exchange a few pleasantries in their own language.

Central Catholic, who played them yesterday, invited the team to their tent for some hot dogs after the game. Today, starting at 9 am, the 16 varsity boys teams who are still in the hunt will continue. The ultimate winner will have to succeed in four games on the hottest day of the year.

These include Allen, Becahi, Ben Franklin, CB West, Central, Delaware Valley Charter, East Stroudsburg North, Easton, Emmaus, Freedom, Nazareth, Northampton, Parkland, Quakertown and Reading.

    Bernie,basketball is big in Europe. The Greeks a nuts about it and routinely fields one of the best European teams. Scott Armstrong

    Great post, Bernie! Glad to see you're out there reporting on community events, while we can browse from our air conditioned spaces. I assume you'll be out there today too. Enjoy.

    Bye the bye, I visited France 10 years ago and had a great time meeting the people and speaking with them. The French-American nonsense some people harbor I find pathetic. Small minds with small thoughts.

    Absolutely great post! We're fortunate in this area, SportsFest, The Stellar Tournament, all the soccer, field hockey and lacrosse tournaments, state champions from across the valley in many sports. Plenty of opportunities to see great HS (and above) players and teams. Brings alot to our quality of life and makes this area special.

    I visited Europe in the late 80s to spend time with a friend who was playing professional basketball. One of the younger player shared with me a scrapbook of NBA player pictures he had cut out. To say they loved basketball would be an understatement.

    Before I left I gave the young man two pair of NBA shorts and one shirt I had brought along. He actually was choked up on the gesture.

    And once again, sports fest has tore up the grass, ripped up the sod, compacted the shit out of the soil along a floodplain, and generally raised hell with the park.
    The place looks like a shit hole today.
