Dent Applauds Court's NCAA Ruling

My grandson: one of the last at JoePa's statue
Yesterday, a seven-judge panel of the Commonwealth Court issued a ruling in a dispute involving the Pennsylvania Senate, Penn State and the NCAA. Speaking for the Court, Judge Anne E. Covey was critical of the $60 million fine and other sanctions imposed as a result of the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. The Court refused to overturn a recently enacted sate law that would require the fine to be spent on child protective services in Pennsylvania.

She blasted NCAA sanctions.

"High school athletes who had no involvement in the criminal acts were prevented from obtaining a free college education. Student-athletes, trainers, coaches and support personnel who were taught and trained to be and do their best were stopped from competing and student-athletes from other colleges and universities were also precluded from competing against them by the prohibition against post-season play. Student-athletes, trainers, coaches, administrators and support personnel who had excelled in their jobs through hard work, practice, commitment, team work, sportsmanship, excellence and perseverance were told none of that mattered."

Lehigh Valley Congressman Charlie Dent, who has previously proposed legislation that would require greater transparency and accountability from the NCAA, and has urged the restoration of all PSU scholarships, is quite pleased with the decision.

“I wholeheartedly applaud the decision by the Commonwealth Court. As I have repeatedly said, the $60 million in taxpayer money should remain in the state. All of the money – not just 25% of it – should be used to protect Pennsylvania’s children.

He calls the decision "a great step to benefit Pennsylvania’s kids. What great news!"

  1. Did they overturn the part where they took all the wins and championships away?

  2. Oh I'm sorry but did this create any jobs Charlie for the long term unemployed?

  3. The unemployed should be asking this president where the jobs are. Especially full time and non government jobs.

  5. Since the subject today is Dent, let it be noted that he just voted in favor of the Paul Ryan Republican budget, which cuts Medicare along with other social programs.

    "Moderate", like Hell.

When the Corporate tax rate is reduced from 9.5 % down to 6% which is the tax rate in most states only then will you see major job growth in the private sector. Pa. has the highest Corporate tax rate globally. Thats a fact.

  7. I raised and educated three engineers who graduated from PA universities in the last decade and immediately left to quickly find jobs in other states. PA's number one export is natural gas. Our number two export is educated people in search of employment. Rather than address this, PA obsesses over a stupid football coach. Charlie has a safe district and no opposition. Why should he give a shit about any of his constituents. He's a lifer and everybody can screw themselves.

  8. I've given up on Charlie. To me, he appears to be attaching himself to the apron strings of John Boehner and other insiders considered to be RINO. He might have been promised a move-up position to a plum committee, or something.

I'm afraid, like so many others, he believes there is nothing really wrong with big government, so long as he remains a part of it.

  9. It is truly sad that Charlie has become the political whore that he is. He doesn't give two shits about the poor or the less fortunate in his district. He now has an extremely right wing district and he knows what he has to do to keep it. The district is more than ninety miles long and created solely for him. The Lehigh Valley gets screwed and Charlie gets a guaranteed dest. Go figger.

Address what? That your three kids left town? There are plenty of engineering jobs in PA. Perhaps they left because of sad sacks like you and the backward thinking on the region?
