Hill: Obamacare Premiums to Skyrocket

It was a bad piece of legislation fraught with problems, but was shoved down an unwilling public's throat by Democratic partisans who thought they knew best. Now, in addition to the myriad of problems already reported, comes word from The Hill that premiums are expected to rise notably, and in some areas of the country, will double. Instead of being honest about yet another problem, Obamaphiles are downplaying the latest bad news.

85 comments:

  1. As opposed to you and the Party line Republicans overplaying the issue.

All the latest polls show a clear majority of people in the country not wanting to have the ACA repealed. They also point out that as time has passé the more they have learned about the Act the more they approve of it. The Republican led disinformation team is losing steam on the issue. However, they will vote to try and repeal it for the 52nd time, while voting down unemployment benefits.

In fact more people are insured now than before the plan went into effect.

I realize you have the same talking points Charlie Dent has but once again they are loaded with misrepresentations and outright lies.

    Reality Now

  2. Keep telling yourself that, cRaZy Now. Your thinking has worked wonders in recent elections. Why don't you blame the increases on Stoffa while you're at it?

  3. Facts are facts and your "facts" are not!

    ReplyDelete
  4. All that poll means is that Americans are resigned to a bad law. Election results tell us what they think of those responsible. So does Obama's dismal approval ratings. The fact is that premiums are going up markedly , the very evil this law was supposed to eliminate. But you can't see beyond your own party to recognize a mistake. That's the reality. Now.

  5. Come on Bernie, ignore the burr in your butt. This is lousy journalism, backed by lousy journalism. "A senior industry professional from a swing state, who requested anonymity." Please. Stick to local news with your occasional humous slant; not politically motivated distractions from anonymous people. We get that you hate Obamacare, and will never say anything positive about it.

    ReplyDelete
  6. It is actually good journalism instead of the propaganda being fed to the masses by Obamaphiles. I thank God that independent journalism still exists, though it is increasingly difficult to find. As for hating everything about Obamacsre, that's just not true. For example, I agreed with the coverage for pre-existing conditions. But 90% of the law is garbage, from the 30-hour rule to the bedpan tax to the tax on local governments providing decent coverage. But stick your head in the sand and say everything is wonderful.

  7. My prem, ium (for a better plan with a lower deductible and enabling me to continue to see my preferred provider(s) went down 20%.

  8. I finally signed up on the marketplace for affordable healthcare. It feels like I live in a civilized society.

But you keep reading those GOP talking points Bernie. Dent will be happy to keep giving them to you.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1:28 and 1:30, that was not my experience. After over a month, I got a plan that was ridiculously high, even for a person with a limited income, and including lousy coverage. I know several others who would lose out big.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It's just a lousy law, a point made repeatedly before it was shoved down our throats.

  11. Attacking the ACA is the only drum the GOP has. They look terrible on all other issues. This helps Charlie short term but will hurt him long-term as the "horror"; storied are debunked one by one.

Even though the truth is getting out that the ACA is helping more and more people, the Republicans with Fox and sympathetic talking heads, continues to beat the "Obamacare" drum.

It may in fact still work in this year's elections in some swing areas. However, as time goers on and all the "demons" the GOP prophesied do not come about people will realize that once again this is about protecting the Republican fatcats, while trying to keep the US in 36th place in the world on health. We are right behind some eastern European country's so that something.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Our shirty medical care and even shittier costs are not being solved by Obamacare. That's a point Dent made when he spoke so eloquently against this injustice. He suggested legislation aimed at reducing cost instead of making it more expensive and then forcing it on everyone. As for horror stories, the bedpan tax is very real. So are increases in premiums. So are major increases in the costs of running a small business. The paperwork alone is mind-boggling. Then we have Obama lies like, "you can keep your doctor." It is an outrageous injustice and those of you who are blinded by partisan politics are unwilling to see it. You're no better than the Republicans you deride.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Christ O'Hare, I hope Dent at least buys you a dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I thought this was about facts. You are unable to argue with the law's inadequacies, and resort to the usual nonsense I expect from partisan hacks on both sides of the aisle.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The only thing "shoved down our throats" are the teabagger sour grapes.
the Republicans biggest fear is coming true. Despite numerous attempts to destroy the ACA through legislation, lies and fake horror stories. the Act is working. People are accepting and realizing this is a good thing. That has always been the Republican fear. the ACA is the only "boogey man" they have left and it is fading away as the light of reality is shinning on the reality of the Acts successes.

Thousands and thousands of people are finally getting health care insurance they couldn't' get in the past.

The usual game of hate and fear pushed by the radical right wing is falling to the inevitability of facts.
More and more of their "true horror stories" are being debunked and shown to be faked.

There is still a hard road ahead for those of us wanting America to progress to a modern industrialized nation level of healthcare as opposed to pay to play but we are getting there.
Sing the song of the past Bernie but the real facts are on our side and your old talking points are getting knocked off over and over again.

The latest myth was debunked by a Canadian Healthcare professional when a Republican lawmaker asked her to confirm Canadian Doctors are "fleeing" Canada because of their healthcare system. She explained with real facts show that was untrue and that in fact more American Doctors are going to Canada due to the stability of the single payer system.

So yes, I agree the "facts" will set you free and the facts are destroying all the old "voodoo fear" of the Republicans.

I want to thank the Republicans because I believe their over the top and crazy attacks on the ACA, which is really a mandated "private" Insurance plan, will probably bring about the single payer system most people really want and the Republicans fear the most.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If you like your plan you can keep your plan; if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor

liars. Lying was the only way the libs could buy these votes. The only way they could use working people's money to secure the votes they needed to stay in power.

They've gone too far. Their position of power is doomed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 6:46 -

Don't forget that your premiums will be going down $2,500.

    ReplyDelete
  18. They tout that they reached the 5 million sign up point.

What they do not explain is that some estimates have as much as 20% not PAYING for the sign up.

What they also do not say is that the majority of the sign ups were from people who lost their insurance at work because of the new regs, not the uninsured or the people who could not get insurance in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow, first time in history that health care premiums have increased...

    http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2013/dec/15/ron-johnson/obamacare-health-insurance-premiums-havent-gone-do/

Health care should be like car insurance, if you want to eat like a goat, and drink and smoke to excess, that's fine. You should just have to pay more. Everyone should get annual health and wellness evaluations and pay a premium based upon their lifestyle choices..

Oh no, cry the teabaggers, not personal responsibility!

    ReplyDelete
  20. So now we've gone full circle. The whole point of Obamacare was to drive those spiraling costs down. Now you take a shot at the tea party and say get used to higher prices. Ignorant. You can't see beyond your partisan nose.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Democrat apologists and the media can spin, excuse, denigrate, impugn, and explain all they want but it won't make any difference this time because this law is directly affecting people in a very negative way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Obamacare will possibly be seen as the worst piece of legislation ever to be 'bungled' into law. Had it been approved by the Republicans it would damage no less.

This legislation was not about providing improved healthcare, it was about increasing the role of big government into our lives, income redistribution, loss of individual freedom, and achieving near total dependence on state.

I also condemn Republican leadership for not fighting harder, and go along-to-get-along guys like Charlie Dent who seem to prefer 'poking around the edges.' despite really confronting the now more obvious transformation of America Obama promised.

It's abundantly clear to me, America needs big changes at the top of BOTH parties, term limits, a return to rule of law rather than rule of any one man, no matter how charismatic he/she may be.

We also need better service from places like the Morning Call and Express Times, but they're being held accountable for their choices more each day, so there's still hope.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 4:59

Yes, we all now want single payer because the government has once again shown how competent it is.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I never believed the lies being shoved down our throats by this dishonest and now spineless coward of a president. Obama is the world's laughingstock.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Once again, I forgot to sign my 9:20am post. Sorry.

I am proud to stand behind what I write and encourage you to do the same. Accountability is a good thing. We need more of it.

    Fred Windish

    ReplyDelete
  26. 9:20, Charlie Dent is not a "go along to get along type" and fought this law vigorously. He is just not a baby holding his breath when he doesn't get his way, like the republican extremists you support. he is a grown up who recognizes good government requires compromise. There is no question we need medical care reform. Grown ups like Dent proposed a piecemeal approach, trying out different aspects, introducing things gradually and making changes where needed. You object to extremist from the left and think the answer is extremism from the right. Except you think there's nothing wrong with your divisive approach to governance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Actually, the whole point of the Affordable Care Act was to make affordable health care available to everyone. My costs dropped by more than half. noticed you avoided the part about 'personal responsibility', and I might remind you that the vast majority of government handout takers are in the red states, with the southern states (teabagger heaven) taking the most.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bernie,

We won't agree on Charlie Dent, but that's OK. We each only have 1 vote. I believe he has not been aggressive enough, too willing to yield to the leadership of his party. A leadership that has pretty much been complicit in all of this through its strategy. Difficult challenges require more than what I have seen from Charlie. That's all. It is not extreme to feel this way.

    Fred Windish

    ReplyDelete
  29. And the red states have large cities so what's your point???
In the end 30 million still won't have healthcare so what's your point???
You obviously have no problem winning an arguement or anything else by lying and bullying. This is what people are waking up to.
There are at least 2 sides to everything spoken and you are the sheep who want the rest of us to just go along with your one sidedness. No thanks.
Elections are coming and just as 2 mil. R's did not come out to vote for Romney, you too will see D's who lost interest or do not like what they see happening.
A few of you saw cost lowered. Big deal. How selfish when there are really sick people who now can't afford their insurance.
As usual many on the left will only see what helps their particular needs or their party's needs. Eventually they will sour when enough of them have to live with something that hits home for them. That's what it takes.
This was sold on a lie just like The terrorist are on the run. All to win an election. Facts are just that and all of your complaining doesn't change it.
You are the bullies in the schoolyard and now we all know it. Whatever's makes you happy.....and nothing does so we just keep bulling.
True Americans...right. Union thugs and their kind.

  30. Here we go. Extremist hate on both sides. Can't you people get beyond that instead of looking like idiots? This is not the Daily Kos or Red State blog. Most of us are sick of the partisan bickering. Knock it off already.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bernie some on this blog who tout this disastrous law do not care if it cost you more. For every one who saves there is another seeing cost rise. People who were just affording their cost now can't afford it because their tax money will go to someone else and too bad for them.

It's a disaster and 57% or so wish it had never passed. They will remember the lies that seem to roll so easily off the tongues on the left. This will keep good people home on voting day or make them rethink voting for these liars.
Not everyone rewards liars. Just narrow minded bullies. And worse....
And what does the above say that is wrong. We are all forced to live with these disasters and you don't think people are frustrated enough to speak up?

  33. Affordable health care is getting very expensive. It's unimaginable that our federal government has been unable to manage this efficiently and effectively. Who would've guessed? The insurance company bailout debate is going to be classic. Obama gave them a very sweet deal. They win no matter what happens. More than a million fewer people are now insured. That's success?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bernie, you are really a dead-ender. Give it up, Obamacare is a vast improvement over what we had, and it is not going away. You and the Republicans have failed in so many ways on this.

  36. Here is a quote from Ed Kilgore at Washington Monthly:

And the “premiums to skyrocket” claim directly contradicts a variety of on-the-record assessments by health insurance executives—e.g., Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini, Wellpoint president Joe Swedish, and Cigna CEO David Cordani—that the Obamacare premium structure is working out relatively well. And the most reliable independent study, from the Kaiser Family Foundation, concluded that the much-feared “death spiral” of premiums that Viebeck seems to be predicting as a reality for much of the country is very unlikely to occur.

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal-a/2014_03/the_sky_is_falling_says_anonym049541.php

By the way, if you want to know about what is really happening in healthcare, go to the Kaiser Family Foundation Website. They give you information. Bernie gives you disinformation.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Actually, what Aetna CEO Bertolini said is that rates are going up. You turn what he says on his head and try to make it come out the way you want. Obama is spending $17 million a month for this kind of propaganda, but it isn't working. You can shine shit all you want. It's still shit.

  38. Here is a comment I published over at the Broad and Pennsylvania blog.

You really have to wonder about Bernie:

His brain: How can he not realize that Republicans have not contributed one iota to the health care debate, and have tried to derail any improvement in any way possible.

His heart: How can he not realize that the health care law helps millions of people. Does he not care about this?

    ReplyDelete
  39. If it is not partisan sniping, it's personal.

My brain: I followed the Obamacare debate closely. It is not Republicans who slammed the door on open dialogue. That was President Obama and the Democrats, and it happened AFTER the President promised everything would be transparent. I saw every Republican amendment l, and there were numerous, rejected. I saw Dent's proposal to gradually implement discarded. I saw Pelisi sneer at attempts to eliminate a tax on prosthetic limbs for our wounded warriors. I saw absolutely no attempt to achieve the ostensible goal of making health care affordable. Not even an attempt at liability reform.

My heart: Doctors are leaving this state, and appointments for health care are taking longer. Because you can 'to keep your own doctor, people are waiting months to see someone they don 'to know and who is limited in what he can do. When we have rationing, ask me about my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bernie 11:35

Your head: From what you say, I doubt if you followed the health care debate closely. To wit: most observers concluded that Republicans could have influenced the outcome significantly had they chosen the path of cooperation rather than the path of obstuction. But instead, you had the Republican Jim DeMint gloating that health care would be Obama's "Waterloo". You had Republican senators (Wyoming) openly bragging to their constituents that any legislation they proposed was just for the purpose of delaying and killing the legislation. You had the Minority Leader of the Senate to just "tear up the legislation and start all over again".

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bernie 11:35

Your heart: Other countries cover ALL of their people. Why then cannot we? I rejoice that people who couldn't previously afford insurance can now do so. I rejoice that people who were denied because of pre-existing conditions can now have care and peace of mind. This from one who would not be alive today but for adequate health insurance.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Of course we can and should cover everyone. But don't pass a flawed bill, and if you do, fix it already instead of telling people they don't care. Geez

    ReplyDelete
  43. 11:35, I followed it very closely. I just refuse to buy into your revisionist history. I saw Republicanscrepeatedly znubbed by partsan hacks and now GOP ranks are full of partisan hacks. Congratulations.

    ReplyDelete
  44. "I just refuse to buy into your revisionist history"

But that is exactly the GOP talking points that you are echoing for Charlie. The Republicans have been avoiding the healthcare debate since the Truman Presidency, Hell, even the FDR Presidency. They still want to get rid of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

It is pure philosophical ideology. Guess what, that is fine but please don't dress it up to somehow be a kind of "different" way to solve the problem of healthcare.

The Republicans believe in the 1898 way of American life. That is why their ranks are thinning. It is a short term philosophy that will ultimately fail at some point in the future as the reality of the present overpowers the rose colored-glasses view of the past.

There has never been a real desire to "work together to reform" healthcare as evidenced by your own Dent talking points. The old "tort reform" argument has always been about getting the trial lawyers the big companies hate. The impact on healthcare cost is roughly 1 to 2% even by many conservative estimates.

Also the old "appliance" tax issue is another red herring. Something like the Corbett no tax on shale drilling argument.

Fact is the Republican line is and always has been delay and avoid. Since they never believed there was a healthcare problem, why would they want to deal with it in a serious manner?

Their current public line may be to to negotiate changes. They are clear on their own inner party communications, it is to "repeal and replace".

Problem is they never have had a replacement, nor do they today.

So keep on singing that revisionist history Bernie. You sound exactly like every other talking head on Fox and your quotes are practically word for word the quotes every Republican soldier has been handed for years.

The fact is the ACA is working. It has problems as any law this large. Frankly, less problems anticipated when you consider Republicans actually encourage people not to sign up for care and to go without insurance if their old plan is cancelled not by the government but by the Insurance company.

Years and years before the ACA, people were tossed from Insurance plans, premiums increased regularly, HMO's dictated which doctor you would see, people waited to get appointments, and on and on. So the hysteria created by the right wing fanatics is so much smoke that has been effective so far.

However, as other writers have pointed out, despite all the obstruction and revisionism by the right, the plan is getting going and more and more people are getting health insurance and benefitting forom a long overdue health care reform. Even with all its flaws it still is better than the "lets kill all the lawyers" chant form the right.

You are right about shinning shit but the right will keep on polishing until their arms fall off.

  47. From Bloomberg View:

    http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-03-19/obamacare-s-war-of-leaks

"But insurance officials are quick to emphasize that any spikes would be a consequence of delays and changes in ObamaCare’s rollout.
    ...
Insurance executives have every incentive to be as alarmist as possible. The administration and the insurers are now engaged in a lengthy negotiation about what you might call “The Obamacare Exchange Rescue Package of 2014.” In response to public outcry, the administration has made a bunch of changes to the rules — allowing people with “grandfathered” plans, for instance, to keep their policies. Those rule changes are going to cost the insurers a considerable sum. So the administration is proposing more rule changes, this time to funnel money to the insurers.

The insurance industry would like the funnel to be as big as possible. One way to encourage this is to tell reporters that you’re planning to triple policy premiums in “a populous swing state” — during an election year."

    ReplyDelete
  48. If Obamacare is so great ...

Why are members of Congress exempted from having to participate in the mandatory program?

Why have all these other corporations, groups, etc., received these special "waivers" if everybody else has no choice but to get on board?

Why does Obama keep delaying the implementation of the "Affordable Health Care" Law that he was in such a hurry to get passed?

Why did Obama have to lie so repeatedly about the "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor stuff"?

These are valid questions that deserve rational answers.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh what a tangled we we weave, when at first we practice to deceive.

  50. The Insurance companies told the President people would not lose insurance, they lied to him. He learned a lesson. In his first year the Republicans said they wanted to work with him to implement "meaningful" healthcare reform, they lied to him. He learned a lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 1:19 - I'm not about to respond to so many of your generalizations. I do want to say your observation that Republican ranks are thinning is correct. Just not for the reason you seem to think.

People, like me, have/or will soon abandon the Republican Party because of its awful leadership. They leave because they believe the party no longer represents itself as a viable alternative to big government. We want a STRONGER Conservative voice to balance the radical decision-making of today's progressive movement.

Do you have a citation for this claim? The one about waiting months. Also, please provide numbers of doctors leaving the state.

You speak about partisan bickering and then throw red meat out there without it being substantiated in any way.

  76. These are valid questions that deserve rational answers.

Don't forget Benghazi!!!! And of course Obama took out that Malaysian airliner to divert attention. This guy is something else.

  77. We want a STRONGER Conservative voice to balance the radical decision-making of today's progressive movement.

Smoke some weed and attend a gay wedding, Freddie. Lighten up.

When you voted for Nixon in 68 to take care of the hippies and Reagan in 1980 to "just say no", you voted for FAR more moderate Republicans than you do today. So what exactly are you looking for? The Repubs are lost in the wilderness because of some false mythology of the GOP of the past.

  78. Right now, I am offended that Brown is spending $84k on a no-bid pr contract. But Obama is spending $17 million per month for publicity concerning his law. But the same people who are correctly shrieking about Brown see nothing wrong with the use of tax dollars to manipulate public opinion. I'm more consistent.

Manipulate public opinion? It's about advertising a new mandatory federal requirement. Duh.

  79. 8:47, I'll be happy to get the data from Mrs. Rovito, who has devoted the last 5 years of her life to this subject, but not unless you have the courtesy to identify yourself. I don't like spinning my wheels for some partisan hack who will move to the next talking point after being refuted.

At $17 million per month, that is propaganda.

  81. "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor - period!"

How many times did Obama repeat this blatant lie in public?

Um, I've kept my doctor. Anecdotes are fun!

Only a simpleton would translate that line into an absolute. I'll speak slowly: if your doctor doesn't take the instance (private insurance, mind you) that you signed up for, is that because of Obama? Take it up with your doctor.

A link would suffice. I understand it's much easier to just throw shit at a wall.

How else do you recommend informing people of the requirements of the law? Single payer would be far simpler.

  84. If you google, you will find at least 15 links to support what I said. Like I said, I am not going to bicker with some partisan hack who does not have the courtesy to identify himself, yet demands me to waste time while he slinks away anonymously.
