"The NIZ and the CRIZ programs currently being used in the Lehigh Valley are powerful economic development tools that will encourage citizens to live, work, and recreate in the City of Allentown and the City of Bethlehem. It is expected that new businesses will continue to move to the area, bringing with them employment opportunities and an expansion in resident-oriented services for an overall increased quality of life."Hey Scott, when you're finished cleaning out J.B. Reilly's bathroom, please do us all a favor and name the new businesses that have come to the NIZ, other than a subsidized hockey team.

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics. My decisions on these matters are made on a case by case basis, and may be affected by my mood that day, my access to the blog at the time the comment was made or other information that isn’t readily apparent.
Oh where to start. First the hockey team is not subsidized. The City of Allentown owns the arena, the Phantoms pay rent to use the arena. That is your first mistake. Second, KNBT bank is a new business that is moved to downtown. Third, the owner original owner of Blue and Melt is establishing a restaurant at 7th and Hamilton. A 8 story building. is built next to the old court house. A 7 story building of mix use commercial and residential is being built on 7th and Linden. A 8 story Renaissance hotel is being built on the same block. I could go on and on... but all of the above businesses are new business' to downtown Allentown.
ReplyDeleteWhere to start? I could go on forever. Do you think Allentown built that hockey rink for the homeless? It's a subsidy . KNBT is not a new business, but was just recruited from elsewhere. Same for Blue. These are not new businesses but were poached.
ReplyDeleteWhats so bad about poaching.Look at South Carolina. for awhile it was a long commute for mack workers.
ReplyDeleteIf nobody's paying taxes, who cares? Every new business is a further burden to those who DO still pay taxes. That's why Governor Pawlowski tried to pick his neighbors' pockets to pay for it. The math hasn't changed. From an economic standpoint, Allentown 's perceived growth is a Hollywood movie set-like false facade. The emperor has no clothes.
ReplyDeleteThese guys are hot and bothered about Hamilton Crossings too because they are on the payroll of LCIDA.
ReplyDeleteIt's never a good thing when the lawyers representing the municipalities and ones representing the township are either one of the same or significant overlap in firms.
ReplyDeleteThis battle has already been fought --- and lost.
