Can Parsons Beat Scavello?

State Rep. Mario Scavello is a Republican running for the 40th Pa. Senate District. That district got moved from the western part of the state, and now includes most of Monroe County, as well as a good chunk of Northampton County's Slate Belt. Democrat Scott Parsons, a member of Northampton County Council, recently told the Express Times that he's running, too. He's going to have to run hard if he expects to win. '

Scavello, who has been in the state house for about 12 years, has been sprinkling money all over Northampton  County. Republican Council candidates and Executive John Brown all received generous contributions. Scavello had a $392,000 warchest at the end of 2012, so he has money to burn.  I was unable to access his most recent finance reports.

On the issues, Scavello seems like a conservative Republican. As Chair of the House Labor and Industry Committee, he did come under criticism from conservative voices for refusing to push prevailing wage and other anti-union legislation.  On the other hand, the Diocese of Scranton claims he opposes abortion under all circumstances, as well as same sex marriages and same sex benefits. He also supports the death penalty.

I wonder if he has to run everything by his parish priest like Vic Mazziotti.

What about Parsons? I like him and would be inclined to support him, which probably means he'll lose. I have not seen a Facebook page or any web presence. It might be a good idea to start one.

I did see a Scott Parsons Yoga page, but that dude is in India right now, chanting Ooohhhhmmm.

  1. Seriously, is this a joke??

    The answer,Ah, no!

He won't even get re-elected in District four. These guys are great with their egos. Gotta love it.

  2. Parsons broad shoulders are such a turn on, and the no tie look screams blue collar. Glad the COAF helped him oust Ronald McDonald.

  3. Yep. Kind of reminds me of what everyone thought of John Brown vs. John Callahan. Except Scavello isn't as smart and wouldn't know how to make a decisions without Republican "guidance".

  4. Good question. It depends on whether or not the SDCC will put money into the district. The State Senate could be in play if the D's can flip 2 or 3 seats. Tom Corbett will be an anchor around the necks of many Republican candidates this year so it may depend on who the Democratic candidate for governor is and what type of coattails they have. Scott represents more of the district than Mario and there is a D voter registration edge.

  6. There will be at least two other candidates, maybe 3. 1 Monroe County Demo running is Debby York, who as a woman gets the state attention but isn't liked within her own party. The other Monroe candidate is a "self funded" guy who has yet to announce but county leaders seem to have confidence. 1 or 2 candidates from Northampton include possibly: Charles "don't call me Charlie" Dertinger, Mary Ensellin, Joe "one vote" Cappozzolo, and Alicia Karner. In a 3 way election, the winner will come from Monroe County. In a 4 way, Northampton.

  8. Word on the street has it that Rich Grucela had been plaaning a run for senate. He had the money, support and name, and he could beat Skkkavello. But Mario made Rich a lucrative offer to not run. And Mrs Grucela won't let him run.

Grucela is the best choice in this new seat and could win. "RUN RICH RUN!"

  10. Karner won't run. After her failed political entanglement with the Callahan Clan in the last election, she needed Lisa Boscola to bail her out and get her a job with Bob Donchez in Bethlehem.

This will be a Republican cake walk.

  12. At the moment the Tea Partiers are upset that Scavello and the Republicans have screwed them. Scavello declared to a meeting of municipal officials that HB76 was dead months ago. Will they forgive him and vote for him even though he and Gov Crooked only care about the frackers and not about their obsession with no RE tax? Scavello will sell this as a Monroe seat. He already calls it "his Senate seat". But he is an accomplished liar and everyone always believes what they want to hear and he tells all sides exactly that.

  14. Karner has my vote. She has clearly pissed off people who have nothing better to do than post comments here, which must mean she is doing something right.

  15. Yeah, there are some seriously unhinged people out there. It is one thing to attack me, but she gets nailed for nothing by a coward who won't identify herself.

  16. I am with you Alicia. Drop an F-bomb on them.

  17. Scavello throwing around money to buy an election what else is new.

  18. Scavello and his buddies like DeNaples, are crooked as the day is long. So lying comes natural to this Bronx ass who wants to tell us all the great things he has done. Like NOTHing.

  19. Unfortunately, it's quite common for individuals to level claims of "buying out the competition" and personal character attacks when they have no actual valid criticism to use. Scavello has broad-based, bipartisan support and a host of legislative and community service accomplishments. Rumor has it, the Dems sifted through about a dozen challenger hopefuls and none wanted to run against Scavello...and, gasp, some even liked the guy!

  21. Scott Parsons has about as much chance of getting elected as Angle being re elected to county council.... Parsons is viewed by many as incompetent. Ask how is big business venture went in wind Gap?

Hey Scott? when are you going to pay your bills and the money you owe people you skank

  22. How sad can "SUPER MARIO" Scavello and the Monroe COUNTY Republicants really be??? Truth out there is that "Super Mario" threatens to screw with STATE FUNDING for the Stroud Township Volunteer Fire Company, just because of one of his opponents was holding an event in the Firehall which was rented out. GEE so much for the republicants being all patriotic and supporting the 'HEROES" of our communities ,EH?
This is just another low-life type of thing the republicants pull. How can any real serious,"HONEST"" politician look the public in the eyes knowing that the republicants would rather screw around with the districts tilting them to the REPUBILICANTS favor. Isn't that the type of crap pulled off by the communists of the former Soviet union or in 3rd world countries of S. America, Africa and S.E. Asian countries. Any person who calls themselves AMERICAN and yet will support a poilitician and vote for those candidates who prefer to change election laws, cut election hours or methods, then that person really needs to check themselves in the mirror.
The new 40th District supposedly came about due to the games of the COWARDLY Pennsylvanian republicants party. How low can the Republicants get? Hell,in Chestnuthill Township in Brodheadsville,Pa, at the west end firehall, just 5 minutes to go in the 2012 midterms, a gentleman showed up exactly at 7:55 pm. As he entered the doorway to the 3rd precint(lower leevel of the firehall),he was assited and directed to the proper voting room. As he entered the door to the lower balloting room he was met at the door by a male election worker and,at 7:57 pm he was told he was late and as the voter along with the democratic representaive (outside pollwatcher, this male election worker, forced himself into the doorway and took his finger, poking the pollwatcher in the chest and physically pushed the man who wanted to vote, along with the Democratic representative. The Pollwatcher stressed, shwoing the man in the doorway blocking the voter that the time was 7:57 pm and still is allowed in. Polls close at 8:00 pm.
When the democratic Volunteer pollwatcher went to the CONSTABLE,who was there to "KEEP THE PEACE" to complain, the female CONSTABLE,in a very cocky, direspectfull manner responded with a very ignorant quote "SO,What DO YOu WANT TO MAKE A COMPLAINT?" she said this in a very ignorant, snickering tone to her voice, basicaly telling the voter and the volunteer to not waste her time. This constable was then overheard telling someone inside the polling rooms,"JUST TYPICAL TROUBLEMAKERS"
So there you go,Republicants in Monroe COunty are doing anything they can and will do anything they need to do to either intimidate or play games on election day. So anyone who votes for a republicant in Monroe COunty obviously has no respect for the consitution or the RIGHTS OF AMERICAN VOTERS. IN MY EYES these people are thieves, stealing the right to a fair election, especially In MONROE COUNTY of North Eastern Pennsylvanian.
I was that volunteer and made numerous phone calls both to the board of elections in Stroudsburg,The Democratic Party and never got a decent, considerate phone call back.
