Lamont McClure claimed during the Executive race that he's the County's champion of open space. But he joined Ken Kraft last night to reduce an open space grant to Bath Borough for four municipal parks.While they had no objection to dugouts and picnic tables, they objected to $1,270 for a wireless camera monitoring system at Cowling Park. According to Kraft, open space money should not be used for crime-fighting.
The rest of Council disagreed.
Bath might be able to get cameras cheaper than $1,270. I understand Jim Gregory has a few available.

ReplyDeleteActually, I agree with Kraft and McClure on this one. I'm not crazy about the municipal park component of open space to begin with, and would prefer to see it spent on something directly related to its recreational use.
ReplyDeleteCounty parks and their namings after politicians are an important perk to the political class and those who love them. Spend others' money, get a park named after you for your tireless work in giving away what wasn't yours.

Open space in Penn's woods was woodland before being clear-cut for farming. Now, we prop up farmers and write checks to multi-kabillionaires like Jaindl because we overproduce crops on Dust Bowl era programs. We pour milk into the ground and wastefully burn corn for fuel in our gas guzzlers.
Farms aren't open space and we don't need nearly the number we used to. Stop the open space madness. Make these farmers return their land to woods.

Let me ask you a question, when you voted for the open space mil increase a few years back, do you think we would be spending that money on survalance equipment? Maybe It's the new "green" survalance equipment.
I still feel it is not in the spirit of the open space program, if that's incompetence, please explain your definition of incompetence to us all

Ken, If you're getting slammed, you must be doing something right. I happen to agree with you. I probably am a bit more extreme. I don't think park money should even be used to fix a pool.

ReplyDeleteKen you need to soell check surveillance. The cameras were requested to protect the parks from vandalism. You can buy new playground equipment but if it is trashed pubic funds are wasted. So what is the big deal in allowing it? The large majority of council agreed.
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for Ken, but can speak for me. I'd agree that most Council members would include just about ALL park improvements as open space, even surveillance cameras. But is that what people think about when they think open space? My view is much more restrictive. I'd want that money used for acquisitions, greenways and maybe some of the playground equipment mentioned. That's it.
ReplyDeleteWell it's surreal that I have become the conservative voice on council when it comes to spending money. So everybody said yes and 2 said no, what is it that you want a stamp of approval of all expenditures with no questions at all? I don't think that is what I was elected for. I will continue to ask for clarification on all monies spent if I don't understand why or don't agree with the expenditure.
