Upper Nazareth to Consider Single Trash Hauler

Upper Nazareth Township Supervisors will consider a single trash hauler proposal at their Monday night meeting. As in Bethlehem, this plan faces stiff opposition by independent haulers.

Yvonne Plakotaris, from East Penn Sanitation Inc., raises many of the same objections presented in Bethlehem.

“What good does a controlled single hauler system do for the citizens?" asks Plakotaris. "Why do local municipalities think they can do a better job than private enterprise? Cheaper rates the council says. I say not. The council is not fully explaining the expenses of additional staffing, legal fees, etc. that these contracts incur.”

I have not had an opportunity to discuss this with Upper Nazareth Supervisors, but will try to do so on or before Monday. .

  1. this east penn person is misleading the public. the municpalities are not asking to run the hauling. they will hire a company to do that.

Didn't their boss get tossed from NJ for his shady dealings? Why did DEP fine ep and not allow them to pick up recycling?

  3. I prefer the single hauler trash day is the same day for everyone there are standardized trash bins and my township negotiated a better price over the year before. I am a free market guy but some functions are government functions. I think trash is one of them.

I am also a free market guy, but what I don't think you see is the local pols think this is another way to feed their pig. Administrative work (nepotism)or a administrative fee for providing the service (slush fund taxes). Why does our government always feel that there has to be a law for everything? When they don't have any money left then they say we need to cut police and firefighters. Same shit different day. We deserve better.

  5. I did also see Yvonne's statement. Obviously she should do her homework before making statements. I do understand she is concerned but it is not for any if he reasons she writes about
It is just so her company can continue collecting higher fees than any municipality that has a single hauler. I resent the letters I have received from Herceg signed by her, attempting to incite me and my neighbors with misleading and false statements .She must think we are all stupid to believe the things she pretends matter to her. even my 12 year old says the only thing Herceg is worried about is losing all the high paying accounts

  6. After her first letter a few months ago, i attended a township meeting and found out that everything in that letter was not factual. It became obvious that East Penn was not being truthful and that the one hauler system will be best.
If I would go to that meeting I WOULD ask questions of the commissioners. Why haven't they switched to the one hauler system years ago. That is something that could be questioned and investigated, did they not convert because East Penn was giving a kick back?

Good point, I have relatives in Palmer Township, Forks Township, Hanover Township, Nazareth, Stockertown, and Tatamy who who all have single bauler and pay less and get more services than I do with Harceg now.

I also agree with Anon 11:54 why wasn't this done years ago. I generally am opposed to government telling me what to do, but this is a situation where they should be involved.

  8. I hope the residents of Bethlehem also will come to understand the benifits of a single hauler system esp when they see at the end of Jan whe the bids are in how much their rates will go down

  9. Hey Folks, East Penn Sanitation Inc. isn't the only trash hauler serving Upper Nazareth. That is the beauty of a free enterprise system. If people think our price is too high, they can seek out a less expensive trash hauler and switch. How would you feel if you only had one newspaper or one oil company or one landscaper or one phone company to choose from? Competition keeps pricing stable. We haven't raised our rates since 2008. Can you say that about your taxes, water bills, sewer or trash bills that are managed by government?Yvonne Plakotaris East Penn Sanitation Inc.
