Cummings: Obamacare Ruling Will Reawaken Voters
This comment was posted on my blog this morning. Anonymously, of course.
Matt Cartwright's opponent is Laureen Cummings. She's a mother of four, a registered nurse who started a home health care business and is the founder of Scranton's tea party. Here's her reaction to the Supreme Court's Obamacare ruling:
"Today, the American people and the Tea Party can claim a victory with the Supreme Court’s narrowing of the powers of the commerce clause and calling out Obamacare for what it really is: yet another tax.
"In recognizing the individual mandate as a tax, the Supreme Court has clarified to the American people that the Obama Administration has no problem in further punishing Americans with yet another massive tax burden, even in the midst of what President Obama claims to be the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression.
"This decision will reawaken the electorate and those Americans who not only want government out of their lives, but also, who refuse to give the IRS even more power than it already has. This decision is a rallying cry to elect those of us who will repeal this law and reform our Byzantine tax code."

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics. My decisions on these matters are made on a case by case basis, and may be affected by my mood that day, my access to the blog at the time the comment was made or other information that isn’t readily apparent.
Funny how this prosect is against everyone taking some responsibility for their own care if they can afford it. That is what the individual mandate is. The doublespeak is remarkable. I hope she doesn't tread on me and keeps her for profit business out of the pockets federal taxpayer subsidized patients.
ReplyDeleteSeems Ms. Cummings removed some of the incendiary rhetoric of her website that was present back in April. That was wise.
ReplyDeleteYou still have to love her tagline: ”Please join me in the fight to Restore the Republic."
RESTORE the Republic? What?
She's right, This is another TAX on Middle Class America! In fact 75% will be paid by those earning less than $250,000.00. The Wealthy will be able to afford private care...the rest will be waiting in line at the Clinics!
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeleteIt is time to break the chains that are keeping our men and woman from voicing their God given right to say NO to unions! A RIGHT that has been taken away from them. It is time to RESTORE OUR REPUBLIC and this is a great place to start.
She's right, This is another TAX on Middle Class America! In fact 75% will be paid by those earning less than $250,000.00. The Wealthy will be able to afford private care...the rest will be waiting in line at the Clinics!
ReplyDeleteHuh? I'd guess over 75% of Americans have healthcare already and nothing will change. At all. The others need to pony up and get healthcare so we don't have to pay for them any longer. This will drive costs down.
By the way, the penalty for being a freeloader on the rest of us is a whopping $95 or 1% of your earnings.
So, please, instead of ranting, just get coverage so I don't have to pay for you anymore. This was Romney's idea in MA and it was Bob Dole's plan in the 90's. Stop with the feigned outrage and outright lies.
So is this officially a 100% Republican blog now? Where is Holden's response? Cartwright? Just Dent and tea party responses?
ReplyDeleteShe's a joke and she and her tea party nut friends will get crushed in this district..I'm tired about hearing how the ACA will cause us to be taxed out of existance. It's such bullshit..
ReplyDeleteAsk Mitt Romney. It works well in Massachusetts, lol..
After medicare and Social Security passed, the Republicans were selling the same snakeoil..They are so pathetic..Without these social programs most seniors would be destitute..Republicans oppose all social programs for the common good..No surprise here.
ReplyDeleteTax, tax and tax. Europe and Greece, here we come. Who is paying for this ponzi scheme (local, state and federal government) that is being run in this country?
ReplyDelete"So is this officially a 100% Republican blog now? Where is Holden's response? Cartwright? Just Dent and tea party responses?"
ReplyDeleteHolden is a lame duck and voted against Obamacare. Cartwright's views are the first I posted and they were posted yesterday. I will also be happy to post Dougherty's reaction if he sends them this way.
His response would probably be. "And your solution is". Oh that's right I forgot. The treabagger solution is do nothing, get rid of Obama, keep the status quo.
ReplyDeleteSo far the Republican response has been the same, "Naa Naa Boo Boo, we're against anything you do".
Their response has been, you think of ideas and solutions, we will say no and spout tea Party euphemisms.
Pathetic.
I don't understand those against ObamaCare yet call the Court's decision a victory.
ReplyDeleteI was taught in law school, the power of the Federal government to tax is plenary. So I'm not surprised at the decision at its most basic level.
Yet a "tax" has always been tied to something, a transaction, income, property, user fees, services, or even one's head (per capita)
This "tax" is assessed on the absence of anything. I choose to do nothing, and I pay a tax. This is a tax on conduct, and nothing less.
If the federal gov't can tax conduct directly, then it can forget about sin taxes on products, why not tax smokers, coffee drinkers, soda drinkers, beer drinkers, over-eaters, directly? Let them write a check to Obama!
Better yet, tax folks who weigh over 200lbs, or those who have more than 2 kids. Get my point?
This case is terrible precedent. This is a tax on liberty, a huge increase in the power of Gov't not seen since the redefinition of "commerce" itself.

So 15% of Americans don't have health insurance. here's what that means:
ReplyDelete1- 85% of Americans are insured.
2- A goodly number of the 15% are under thirty and think they're bullet proof. I would be willing to bet that many have the money to purchase insurance, but shoose luxuries instead.
The cost of providing health care to the uninsured is only passed on to the rest of us if you accept the premise that the uninsured has to receive healthcare. People make choices. If someone chooses to buy a new smart phone instead of food to last until the next payday, should I be compelled to buy him a hamburger? Forcing healthcare providers to provide care for the uninsured is what transfers the cost to others. If "free" healthcare was not mandated to be provided by providers who receive federal funds, a lot of people would make different choices about their spending.
Voice of Reason
While I would rather the court decided to uphold the ACA on the premise of regulating interstate commerce instead of the right of the government to tax, the mandate itself is one of the pillars of universal healthcare. As has already been pointed out by several responses here, it will stop the emergency room freebies that those without insurance receive at the expense of those of us with insurance. There is no free lunch folks, even if the Republicans promise you they will leave intact some provisions of the Act but won't EVER raise your taxes to give them to you, they are buying your votes....WAKE UP!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the model for Obamacare, via The New Yorker, on Romney and Romneycare, who apparently thinks this is a Republican approach to the healthcare problem:
ReplyDelete"Romney had accomplished a longstanding Democratic goal—universal health insurance—by combining three conservative policies. Massachusetts would help the uninsured buy private insurance; it would create a deregulated online marketplace; and it would require that everyone carry insurance. Uninsured citizens no longer would use the emergency room as a primary-care facility and then fail to pay their bills. “It’s a Republican way of reforming the market,” Romney said later that day. “Because, let me tell you, having thirty million people in this country without health insurance and having those people show up when they get sick, and expect someone else to pay, that’s a Democratic approach. That’s the wrong way. The Republican approach is to say, ‘You know what? Everybody should have insurance. They should pay what they can afford to pay. If they need help, we will be there to help them, but no more free ride.’ ”
Although some influential libertarians condemned Romney, most conservatives praised the plan. Robert Moffit, a policy expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation, which helped write parts of the law, spoke at the ceremony. “The real trick is to retain what is best in American health care while correcting its deficiencies and expanding upon its indisputable benefits,” he said. “Massachusetts has done just that.”

10:41 Sounds like something you would hear in the Balkans
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how this will play out in practice but I choose to withhold judgement on the "tax" until I see what services are delivered and how. I hear a lot of the tea party followers yelling about how badly they believe the government will handle things but I hear few of them complaining about how badly the private sector insurance companies are ALREADY doing things. I don't believe it is only me who has had to fight disputed claims or have private sector insurance reps (who are lucky to have even a BA) override the Rxs or plans of treatment called for by a medical doctor. As for taxes, even most of us who have decent plans already pay significant co-pays and/or deductibles. I am saying this as one of the people having relatively good coverage. I well know friends whose private coverage costs them far more than mine even if they don't use it and huge amounts if God forbid they do have any kind of major issues. I wish the people complaining loudest about what may be coming had spent an equal amount of energy trying to correct the inadequacies of what we already have.
ReplyDeleteFor all of you who like Obama-care.
ReplyDeleteGo get a JOB and stop stealing from the rest of us!
Or go by your own insurance, or go with-out!
The tax is not just the penalty some will pay for not having insurance. It is a wide array of taxes that will be phased in over the next five years.
ReplyDeleteThese are job- killing,economy-crushing taxes, affecting all income brackets.
In addition, the act is designed to eliminate private insurance. Businesses will easily dump employees from their private plans and pay the much-lower penalty instead.
Think your plan is so good that your employer won't do that? Wait until the additional 40 percent penalty for "Cadillac" plans kicks in around 2017 & 2018.
They should end SSI and welfare for many...
ReplyDeleteIF YOU ARE ABLE BODIED...
Pick yourself up and get one or two jobs and support yourself...
Many party, while the r3est work!
Anyone who thinks this law will reduce health care costs is cRaZy. More patients, fewer doctors + rationed care. Name a single government scheme to come in under budget. It also requires 21 taxes that will require increases, as all taxes do. Good luck with that. It's a law that can't be politically sustained without compelling states to expand Medicare. That was just deemed illegal by a 6-2 vote. There's a reason Ginsberg came unhinged yesterday. She knows they've left an unsustainable turd. She'll be Death Paneled before long. I'm sure the cost of her health care is far too high for someone so close to death. If old folks like her would STOP TAKING, we would not be in this mess. In Aleut culture, old folks were responsible and dignified and sent themselves asea by ice floe, so as not to be a burden to society. This is a theme in Obama care. Both young and old will be made to be more responsible. The young, by getting insurance. The old, by dying and not using it. We're all in this together now.
ReplyDeleteLargest tax increase in American history.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Obamabots!
(how many waivers has the Obama Administration issued so far?)
Tax and spend. Tax and spend. Spend, spend, spend. Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax, tax.
(whose paying for all the illegals that just go nationalized? whose paying for all the illegals that were not nationalized? how many more illegals are coming now BECAUSE of Obamacare?)
I'm ready for another FOUR MORE LONG YEARS, what about YOU?
Okay, time for the standard slur on alternative Lifestylists and their well-known-by-now alternative Lifestyles practice ...
I'm still just so damn proud of Obamacare!
ReplyDeleteI will always be.
