Child nd Education Tax credits could give you another $1,000 to $2,500. Cha ching! And don't tell the Republicans, but the poorer you are, the better you do.
Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley (CACLV), which knows how to squeeze money out of the government, is hosting a free workshop called, “Making ‘Cents’ of the Earned Income Tax Credit,” on Thursday, January 20, at the CACLV Forte Building (1337 E. 5th Street) in Bethlehem. It's primarily for caseworkers, employees, and volunteers who work with low- to moderate-income people.
Low- to moderate-income individuals and families could be eligible for up to $5,666 from the EITC. The Child Tax and Education Tax credits could return an additional $1,000 and $2,500, respectively, to eligible families. The workshop will help participants to determine the eligibility of their clients and maximize their tax returns.
Participants will also be given information about CACLV’s Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) program. That program will begin on January 31, and VITA locations will be in the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and Mt. Bethel until the end of tax season. Each site will have volunteers, trained by the Internal Revenue Service, to perform tax returns for households with incomes less than $49,000. Last year, a staff of 125 volunteers prepared 1,375 tax returns with refunds totaling $2,163,362 for low- to moderate-income taxpayers.
