Mr. Ed's Serenade to Bethlehem City Council Saves Mounted Police
Seventy-five people jammed into Town Hall on December 15 for Bethlehem City Council's final budget hearing on its most controversial budget in recent years. Fifty-four jobs are being cut. The City will be forced to borrow $16 million. To pour salt into the wound, a 3/4 mill property tax increase is still being proposed. But what really packed the house was a proposal to reduce the funding to Bethlehem's mounted police unit.
Council Prez Bob Donchez and Eric Evans, who first proposed this idea, quickly changed course after the Mounted Police Unit launched a campaign to save the horsies. But a few people still insisted on speaking, including Mr. Ed.
When he sang the "Empty Feed Bag Blues," Donchez broke down in tears.
So the horsies are safe, but pretty much everyone else is screwed. Even two firefighter positions are being eliminated.

ReplyDeleteYou think we'd learn something from history, but not a speck. Bethlehem folks, just like people of Atlantic City, where promised all the streets would be renamed "easy street" if only they end up hosting a casino.
ReplyDeleteBy all appearances you would think between Steelstax, Christkindlmarkt, Celtic and Muiskfest that Bethlehem were doing so much better then Allentown financially.
Appearances sure can be misleading.
Why is a uniformed police officer, on the taxpayer's dime, speaking at a pubic meeting about what gets funded or not?

Horses can do it all. This is widely known. I love when Mr. Ed tried out for Leo Durocher and the Dodgers. The scene with him sliding into home against John Roseboro after taking Koufax to the wall is classic.

ReplyDeleteAllentown, Bethlehem, Easton......who would have believed four years ago that Easton would be better financially than A and B? Bethlehem and Allentown need to look east and start reducing the size of their government. Its working in Easton. As a resident of Bethlehem all my life I can only imagine that we are the best smoke and mirror players in the state.
