Happy 107th to Alice Herz-Sommer, World's Oldest Holocaust Survivor

  1. alice doesn't hold resentment or dwell on her past treatment. although her ability to do that, served her well to survive as a person, it would not collectively do the jews well to survive as a people. it's best they stay with "never forget"

  2. I was deeply attracted to her story, and heard her say several times that "life is beautiful." This from a woman who lost everything to the Nazis. She was still able to find beauty. Her story should be required reading for every person who suffers from depression. I don't think she forgets, Michael. Nobody could forget. But I think she does serve as an inspiration for many who have been through very difficult times.

  3. Does she live in the Lehigh Valley?

  4. bernie, i have read and seen a number of pieces on her. there is a full documentary soon to be released. my first sentence in comment 1:22 is almost a quote. again, my point is about individual strategy for coping, vs. collective lessons for survival. i agree that she hasn't forgotten the experience.

  5. No, she resides in London, I believe. I still thought it worth pointing out.

  8. I doubt she is the oldest surviving Holocaust victim. Children were liberated. I n fact just last year on a Holocaust documentary. some of the children were interviewed.

One was ten in 1945 so that makes her 75 years old.

Bless this woman's soul and I am glad she has found peace but the title is very misleading.

  9. I was unaware that the BBC was a Zionist source.

  10. Mr. O'Hare I know how Mr. Angle feels about this topic but do you have a problem with someone who is a Zionist?

  11. You don't know how Mr Angle feels and are too cowardly to identify yourself, and I do have a problem seeing the BBC and other mainstream sources identified as "Zionist" sources.

  12. How drug addled is your brain? Who said the BBC is a Zionist source. I am a Zionist source. Until you change your blog policy, I reserve the right to remain anonymous. I do question your hostility towards someone who is a self-proclaimed Zionist. You may understand why I do not identify myself, as this attitude is all too common.

I am merely stating a fact. I don't know the precise source of your allegation. But this lady, God Bless her, is not the oldest survivor. I will leave it at that

    Shalom

  13. Zionist source, In your 6:52 PM comment, I was certain that you were claiming that the story about Alice is a Zionist source. I was unaware you were signing your name that way.
    My mistake.

I am VERY sensitive to anything that could be construed as anti-Semitic, and have been told that I sometimes miss certain code words used by anti-Semites.

So I'll be careful. I'd rather have a Zionist mad at me for misunderstanding him than allow anti-Semitic remarks to go unchallenged. If you are a Zionist, you'll understand.

I am probably a Zionist myself in the sense that I support the self-determination of the Jewish people in their own homeland. But I do not support the more extreme aspects of Zionism or violence committed in its name.

I said: "Huh?" I must be confused; how do the presence of 75-year-old survivors of the Holocaust prove that the woman who is 107 is not the oldest survivor? Cate

It's not you... someone has confused the term "oldest survivor" with "last survivor".

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
