Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham announced today that the county’s Fourth Street Bridge, connecting Fourth Street in Allentown and Fifth Street in Whitehall, will reopen to traffic by rush hour on Monday November 22. Like many others, Don himself commutes in daily from that area and has himself been inconvenienced. But improving the county’s aging infrastructure has been a priority in his Administration. The bridge has been closed since June 21 for major structural repairs.
The $865,000 project included the replacement of all bridge support bearings, expansion joints, drainage system and other incidental work.
Don lives in West Bethlehem...why does he need to use the Whitehall 4th street bridge to commute to work?

ReplyDeleteThe 5th Street Bridge over Route 22is the one PennDOT wants to convert to a pedestrian bridge as part of the proposed Route 22 enhancements.
ReplyDeleteThe 4th St/5th St artery is a valuable alternative especially during Holiday when MacArthur Road and Fullerton retail district are congested.
The Route 22 corridor including the 5th Street Bridge is worthy of Federal funding. Tiger Grants are targeted at transportation projects that have broad reaching impact and that is the Route 22 bottle neck between Fullerton Ave and Cedar Crest.
If Rep Gerlach can request $80M for Route 202, certainly this section of Route 22 which carries 100k vehicles a day is worthy of Federal funding.
I am very please the County is taking a proactive approach in rehabilitating our at risk bridges.

ReplyDeleteThey will build it and hand it over to Whitehall. Seems like a very fair deal to anyone outside of Whitehall.
Yes. We need that money for our skate parks and dog parks in our traditional neighborhoods. Why doesn't LC just transfer ownership of the 5th St Bridge and Linden St Bridge (2 blocks from Hamilton St bridge) over to Allentown? Same thing goes for the Fahy Bridge that is 2 lanes in each direction and has comparable traffic to 5th St bridge. Since the County owns the Linden St and 4th St bridge, maybe they should be the ones to take ownership of the 5th St bridge.
