Pia Varma is running for Congress against Bob Brady in Philly. Win or lose, she's electrifying. It's refreshing to see a candidate who can actually speak about issues instead of how much money she's raised the last quarter.
She's 27, a first generation Indian American and a political outsider who has experienced firsthand what many small Allentown merchants see every day. She and a business partner watched as their efforts to develop a green building were scuttled in favor of a goofy, taxpayer-funded Industrial Empowerment Zone that has failed to produce a single job.
A laissez-faire capitalist, she can cite example after example demonstrating how this country, on all levels, has catered to some businesses, at the expense of others. "Whether we are discussing farm subsidies, bailouts, corporate favoritism, or licenses and privileges given to certain companies, we are in fact seeing the myriad ways that government has reared its head into the markets. Government and corporations invent scheme after scheme to ensure the superficial appearance of free enterprise, line the pockets of each, and shield the government from any blame."
In Pia's honor, I ate Indian food last night. Her web page is here.

I don't know, if this video is representative of her as a candidate, I'm unimpressed. Nothing I haven't heard before, and the fact that its coming from an attractive young indian woman rather than a fat old white guy doesn't really make it sound better to me.
ReplyDeleteI find her mesmerizing. It is not the message, which we've all heard before, but the presentation. I also think that she has a populist appeal. That's very unusual in a laissez-faire capitalist.
ReplyDeleteNot impressed.
ReplyDelete"We want our old jobs back." Times change sweetheart.
This chick is just on some hissy fit mission because her project failed. She can deny it all she wants, but her project would have required government involvement too, a permit, a zoning variance, something.
Anarchy promoted by rich kids who will run in the face of real adversity does not appeal to me.
FYI . . . Bernie your intro implies she tried to do a building in Allentown. After following the link I see it was Philly.
Note that this is a "chick" and a "sweetheart" who is throwing a "hissy fit." Not too sexist, are we?
ReplyDeleteWhat she experienced in Philly is what many small merchants in A=town see day after day. Places like the A-town Vision Center can have four beak-ins in one month when another, nearby bsuness, the ABW, is publicly subsidized and propped up time and again by the Mayor.
And I hate to break it to you, but people do get pissed when they lose their jobs. That hasn't changed at all.
Bernie, seems like you have a lot of fat white guys or jealous women reading your blogs. Youth has its advantages and she sure does.
ReplyDeleteBy the way I won't be blogging for a while. I'm moving to Philly.
See ya.
Bob Romancheck
(And she is a republican, too)
I'll come with you.
ReplyDeleteNice website, but its interesting that it does not list her current or past work history. Does she have any?
ReplyDeleteSo what professional expertise is Pia really going to bring to the table? Sure she wants to let business do their thing but what exactly does that mean.
Being denied a zoning variance (per her website) does not make you a qualified candidate for the United States congress.
Does she sound unqualified to you? She seems to be in full command of the issues, which is more than I can say for many seasoned pols.
ReplyDeletePlus, she has used that inexperiece as an asset. She is a "political ouitsider." Just last week, Northampton County Republicans nearly revolted when the party hierarchy chose a seasoned and experienced person over one of these outsiders.
Right now, outsiders have appeal.
As far as employment goes, i believe she is a writer for Mises Institute and Fusion magazine, both of which are conservative outlets.
But her own response to a question like yours was this. "“I’m not running on a resume. You don’t need a resume or permission to try and prevent your country and your city from failing.”
And she doesn't.
I wish she would just take her shirt off already...
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that maybe she was a community organizer......
ReplyDeleteShe's everything the poseur Obama thought he was - cool, hip, hopey and changey, and most importantly, EXACTLY RIGHT.
ReplyDeleteFree Slushies for everybody. If she gets in it will be tax breaks for all 7-11's and Dunkin Donuts in the city.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny. The Soibhan defenders at WCF slammed me as a seixist for daring to be critical of Sam Bennett, a blatant opportunist. But when Pia Varma is attacked precisely because of her sex and her ethnicity, they are strangely silent.
ReplyDeleteShe's being Palinized by the left and it's perfectly acceptable in the Age of Obama. If word gets out that she carried a special needs baby to term, the left will really go nUtZ!
ReplyDeleteSo she is upset the government favored the other guys project. Maybe they had a better idea?
ReplyDeleteLast time I check the city of Philadelphia is not required to give out zoning variances.
Funny how she was all about the city letting her skirt the law until she got dissed. No she's against government intrusion.
Just like Juanita Broderick, Kathleen Willey, the intern with the blue dress...
ReplyDeleteFeminists are teh hypocrite.
Penultimate.
Didn't laissez-faire capitalism promote NAFTA which in turn sucked our "old jobs" down the drain? The very government which tethers business opened the markets and now we see the result. A service economy. Old jobs. Pfft.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's ironic that someone with apparently no employment history "wants the old jobs back."
ReplyDeleteThe new generation of FoxNews has arrived.
Since she is neither a male nor 10 years old, I don't understand Ohares attraction to her.
ReplyDeleteOhare, like Angle is a mega-sexist. I guess he figured he could shore up his hetero street cred by posting this.
She just isn't ohares usual type.
What a disgusting and filtyhy person you are. Folks, this is the troll who blames Stoffa for everything, and this is why he gets deleted.
ReplyDeletethis latest neocon drivel makes me ill.
ReplyDeleteshe drives on roads that are subsidized by the taxpayer. her car burns fuel subsidized by our defense budget and the blood of our soldiers. she may well have attended a school on the back of taxpayer-subsidized student loans. i could go on and on.
but now she wants government "out of the way."
you know what happens when government gets out of the way? the triangle shirt factory. the company store. the cuyahoga river catching fire.
that's what these bastards want.
"get out of the way". wanna see true laissez faire capitalism? wanna see what happens when government "gets out of the way"? take a look at haiti.
