My Fan Club

After three years of blogging, I've managed to pick up one hell of a fan club. Just about daily, someone anonymously points out that I'm a drunk who lost his license to practice law ... in 1985. I'm threatened with libel litigation weekly and have a nice collection of "lawyer letters" on beautiful stationary. Last summer, I was depicted as the grisly murder victim in a fantasy blog novel. I've been a victim of criminal harassment. I've been impersonated so often on The Morning Call's reader forum that my name is filtered, along with words like shit. I've even received a death threat.

So why do I do it?

Jim Hickey told me blogging would help me pick up the babes. Yeah, he's the guy encouraging me to blog from Tehran, too. In another year, he says I'll be as sexy as Ron Angle. We'll see.

In the meantime, my fan club is now calling me a murderer. Someone was arrested yesterday for Nazareth's first homicide over the last thirty years. It's apparently me.

1) "I heard it's Nazareth blogger **** . He enjoys beating off attackers, and anyone else for that matter."

2) "Be r nie O' Ha re. Who knew his name was that which can never be spoken?"

3) "Ha! Yeah, he must really rank."

4) "Yea, O'hater has a reputation as a certified nut. He feeds the press his whacky rumors and they protect him. The clown is a drunk disbarred attorney for Naz. Very sad case really, except he is a mean drunk so all is fair."

Could be worse. I could have been called a Long Dem.

  2. Those comments only reinforce your relevancy. You should be proud of them. Somebody wants to shut you up and make you go away.

  6. Bernie,
There is not a family I know that doesn't have a loved one who has had an alcohol problem. No one!
It takes enormous courage to stop drinking and you should be proud.

  8. Homicides, Craig Dally surprise appearances, Dent seems to show up there every day, kazoo parades. What ISN'T going on in Nazareth? It seems to be the "it" place in the Lehigh Valley!

  9. Yeah, it's pretty cool here in Nazareth. There's even WiFi in two of the downtown cafes.

  10. Random personal attacks and empty threats of libel are the sincerest form of confirmation that you've exposed the truth about someone or something and that you have sufficient audience and power to threaten their reputation.

  18. Ann McHale/Angela Lansbury..seperated at birth? Saw her in The Manchurian Candidate the other morning on Turner and I swear they are twins! Off with their heads!

  20. What is with women holding cards in front of their face? First Lorraine Pasquali and now this one. Is this a new fad I missed?

The most endearing thing about Bernie is that he doesn't realize the power he yields with his little blog.

McHale doesn't have the brain cells to be the Angela Landsbury character in Manchurian Candidate.

  23. Bernie, keep your chin up!

I want to tell you what happened to me. While I was walking through downtown, an older man approached me with what appeared to be bolt cutters in his hand. He would not tell me his name but asked for my assistance. I told him that I am a religious and don't carry cash on me.

But he started to ramble on about some hearing held at a chapel in our local college and that the street needs to be proclaimed opened. I told him that I couldn't help him but that he would remain in my prayers.

As I was walking away, I looked back over my shoulder to see where he had gone. With that I don't remember anything.

Some young man picked me up off of the ground. He said that I had fallen and banged my head against the sidewalk. He indicated that he thought I had died with the way I fell and landed against the concrete. I was bleeding profusely but refused medical attention. I needed to get to bridge before the birds flew away.

Instead I walked home. Since that accident, I have been sleeping for many hours. But almost every hour, on the hour, I have been vomiting. I think that I have vomited about six or seven times since this morning. Funny, because I haven't eaten anything.

But that is not the heart of the story. I was upset, because of the birds. All the birds weren't there. I think that old man had something to do with it.

Since Bucks County opened up that park, wildlife has decreased. And they tried to throw me out of the college's chapel. But I jumped in front of them and said, "Stop it!" We have the right to be here even if he wants to use the toilet. And no more softball tosses to the Representative's forum. Since Lincoln was president in 1692, we have never had an administration like this one. They should be proud and ashamed of themselves at the same time. Possibly eastern standard time.

Does that story qualify to be weird enough to be inducted into the BO'H fan club?

    Peace, ~~Alex

  24. O'Hater and his band of trolls revel in destroying decent people. Maybe it is to bring them down to the level O'Hater and his cronies occupy.

Hey Banker nothing O'Hare writes is factual. Problem is who is going to spend money to sue him? Why bother, what would you get, his abused and soiled stuffed animals?

  25. Anon 615pm, like I said I haven't agreed with all Bernie has said, but I have never seen an instance where he has lied or misled on anything.

Why don't you take your hate to other blogs that specialize in that sort of behavior?

  27. Anon 9:29 PM,

You must know Bernie pretty well.

Is that why you remain anonymous? Or is it that you suffer from guilt or something else, because you failed to reach out and help another human being?

Please let those feelings go. And live life respectfully. I hope all of your hatred goes away in the near future. I will pray for you and myself.

    Peace, ~~Alex

  31. If you lived in Allentown your property would have been vandalized many times over by now for daring to speak up against the local powers that be. Be thankful you have some distance between yourself and the Queen city.

  32. All it takes is one or two lunatics to make life miserable for a blogger. The internet has simply made it too easy to spew hate and vitriol on the internet, and your anti-fan club (consisting of 2 members) has used electronic media to their hate-filled advantage.

What I don't understand is why your detractors continue to visit your website!

My main concern would be your safety. While most seem to think the hate trolls are harmless annoyers of the blogosphere, your death threats, law suit threats, and continual harrasment lead me to believe otherwise. I just hope we won't see your rivals totally snap and do something truly dangerous. But...it seems entirely possible that they are headed in that direction. Of course, I am the nervous nelly of the bunch, so perhaps I'm just a little too paranoid.

Good luck to you, Bernie - your blog is a great collection of musings and news. Let your detractors continue to post more on your blog than they do their own. In the mean time, keep up the good work.

  33. monkey momma, I wish there were only two dectrators. Actually, the list is long but not so distinguished. I can name some of them. They extend from other bloggers to local political hacks and wannabes.

  34. While we're on the topic of readability, relevancy, and carving a niche in this big old internet, allow me to drop a plug for my new project:

    solofirmfordummies.blogspot.com

It's basically me journaling the trials (pun intended I suppose) and tribulations of a young attorney hanging out his own shingle.

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. If you attack someone personally, I expect you to identify yourself. I will delete criticisms of my comment policy, vulgarities, cut-and-paste jobs from other sources and any suggestion of violence towards anyone. I will also delete sweeping generalizations about mainstream parties or ideologies, i.e. identity politics.
