Lehigh County Time Capsule Full of Junk

Yesterday was the big day. After discovering a forty-five year-old time capsule buried inside a Lehigh County Courthouse wall last week, County Exec Don Cunningham was sure it contained diamonds and pearls. But as TV cameras whirred, an expectant Cunningham was quickly disappointed.

"I felt like Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault," he told me last night. The capsule contained a few news clippings, pictures, two 1963 pennies and some other crap. "They could at least have put in a slinky. What were they thinking?"

Former Morning Call reporter Dick Cowen was thrilled by the news clippings, but refused Cunningham's pleas to "just take the whole damn thing." It included a broken pair of sunglasses, rubber bands, an old battery and a bubblegum wrapper.

Even the Historical Society refused to accept what they call junk, so the time capsule is currently being stored in the county's recycle bin.

  2. I wonder if it was a box that someone was using to steal office supplies until he or she misplaced it?

If nobody wants the rubber bands...

  4. The question you need to be asking Bernie is, what was supposed to have been in the capsule?

  6. I got all of Manhattan for $24 and some beads. If you want to trade the contents of the box for the city of Allentown, I shall demand you make change!

  8. Is it costing the taxpayers any money to "store" this "junk"? Why store it if it is junk; just get rid of it! Perhaps the politicians need to form a special committee to investiage this whole affair thoroughly.
