Northampton County Hangmen & Lynch Mob Angry: Was it Something I Said?

I'll let you in on a little secret. Although I attend lots of public meetings, I rarely speak. It's been well over a year since I opened my big mouth. I'm mostly a voyeur. But last night, I unloaded on the Northampton County Hangmen, and they reacted like little kids.

You see, two weeks ago, the Northampton County hangmen (council) teamed with a green T-shirted lynch mob (AFSCME) to string up Connie Sutton Falk, the county's human resources director. The whole thing was an ambush, designed to embarrass both a county employee as well as her boss, county executive John Stoffa.

I was upset. Still am.

With no notice or opportunity to be heard, the hangmen told a Stoffa cabinet member she should resign. We fought a revolutionary war to secure our right to due process of law. But the Northampton County hangmen, led by Lamont McClure and Charles Dertinger, trampled all over that basic constitutional protection.

I decided to tell the hangmen and their green T-shirted friends that their conduct was despicable.

Last night, there were actually two groups of green T-shirted lynch mobs. One was AFSCME, the same group that strung up Connie Sutton Falk. They were there to gloat. The other union was a bunch of steelworkers, out to screw around with Keystone Cement. It was standing room only, with at least 80 union members present. In addition to that, there was also a group of at least thirty rail supporters.

Knowing I was about to say some things that would be extremely unpopular with both the hangmen and lynch mobs, I told rail activist Paul Marin he should stay far away from me. He sat next to me anyway. The guy has guts.

The meeting started off with "courtesy of the floor," where schleps like me are given five minutes to complain about something. Last night, there were ninety minutes worth of talkers. These included some old lady who claimed Stoffa had stiffed her over $300, after which she walked off without her purse. (I think Angle stole it). Some union dude in short-shorts claimed there's some diabolical conspiracy involving the Saucon Valley Country Club and the FBI to steal land in Lower Saucon Township. I was waiting for black helicopters to come andd get him. No such luck.

I was just one of several wingnuts addressing the hangmen. I mostly repeated the criticisms I've already made here. As each of us droned on, Paul looked like he wanted to shoot himself. Union dudes were actually making and receiving cell phone calls, and the smell of booze wafted in the air, along with stale tobacco. But unlike the others, I really got to Hangman Dertinger, who got redder and redder as I spoke. I could also hear mumbling from the green T-shirted lynch mobs behind me. When I was done, I was extremely unpopular with two different unions.

Hangman Charles Dertinger, chomping at the bit to get back at me, finally got his chance later in the evening. But the Northampton County Bulldog, Ron Angle, had my back. What follows is a circus, demonstrating rather clearly that AFSCME really does think it is running the county and that Dertinger is one of their lackeys. Dertinger actually threatened Angle with violence. Some bald-headed union thug also started walking towardws the dais, shouting and attempting to bully Angle. I recorded every word, and here's a transcript.

Charles Dertinger: "As I sat here relatively patiently, after being accused of some pretty impressive things by our local blogger and character, although his accusation that I made were false against Miss Sutton, they were not only not false but he made no attempt whatsoever to say they were not false.

"I did indeed indicate that Miss Sutton-Falk was abrasive here, and on several occasions my degree being industrial labor relations, she had directed her comment to me, 'If you understood the law . . . ,' which I would find to be argumentative and abrasive. So I believe my comment stands and I stand by my comment.

"His characterization again, and this becomes altogether too commonplace for Mr. O'Hare. He comes to these meetings, he makes a collection of lying statements - I'm sorry, I don't have anything better - lying statements time and again, either here or when he crawls home to his computer.

"To say that things that are in fact - that we violated the ..."

Ron Angle: "Point of order. Do you think it's appropriate to say that he crawls home to his computer?"

Dertinger: "I have a problem with the hypocrisy that has been levelled here tonight. ...

Ann McHale: "We don't need any arguments tonight."

Dertinger: "Specifically, specifically, Listen, you [addressing Angle] don't have to talk from his lap. I'll deal with that."

Angle: "Talk from his lap? Who the hell do you think you are?"

Dertinger: "I ... I ... I'm looking at a man ... "

Angle: "Just who the hell do you think you are? You're obnoxious."

McHale: "Gentlemen, how about we take a five minute recess?"

Angle: "Five minute recess? I'm about to take a two hour walk and get out of town because, quite frankly, they insult everybody who comes in here any more."

Dertinger: "You sat here and lied to us. You ..."

Angle: "Everybody's a liar to you, Charles. The world's a liar. We're all incompetents. 'The World,' by Charles Dertinger. You made accusations a coupla' months ago. Take him into the back room and talk to him somebody."

McHale: "Council's going to . . . uh ... "

Angle: "Region 4 made a decision on you, Charlie. They throwed you out twice."

Dertinger: "Throwed me out?"

Angle: "They voted you out twice, Charlie, they're pretty sharp."

Dertinger: "Time and again, they voted you out as well, pal."

Angle: "Go back to New York."

Dertinger: "Keep walking."

Angle: "If you put the rail in, you can be the first on it back to New York."

Dertinger (now standing): "You wouldn't like to see how I would act without the press here."

Angle: "Get gone."

Dertinger: "You're an absolute coward."

Angle: "You're a pitiful individual."

Dertinger: "Coward."

Angle: "You insult a woman out there . . ."

[The green T-shirted lynch mob begins making cat calls and starts yelling at Ron Angle.]

Angle [to the lynch mob]: "Sit down and be quiet. You're a bunch of puppets out there. You and the union wants to run the county, that's good."

[Green T-shirted lynch mob continues yelling at Angle, and a bald-headed brawny union thug approaches the dais, yelling].

Angle [to the thug]: "You can have yourself removed. You don't run this county. The government runs this county, not the union. [to Dertinger]. He's your lap dog. Take him outside and talk to him."

[Bald-headed union thug]: "I'm here for the employees."

Angle: "You're here for the employees all right. You're here for the union dues. Who are you kidding?"

Angle: [to Dertinger] "Bernie's right. You drug them all out here to put a show on."

Dertinger: "You're a hypocrite and a liar." [Green T-shirted lynch mob begins to applaud].

Angle: "Connie Sutton Falk, don't you think she's a human being?"

Union thug: "She lives in New Jersey."

Angle: "She lives in new Jersey. Oh, that's the reason you insult her - she lives in New Jersey."

Dertinger: "The entire administration lives outside the county. Are you kidding me?"

Angle: "He brings the union out here to make a mockery out of government. The President [McHale] won't control those two [Dertinger and lynch mob] and that's why it's out of order. When he said that he [O'Hare] crawled home, she should have said that's out of order, right then and there. This could have ended. You know, taxpayers don't crawl home."

Dertinger: "I will suspend my remarks."

McHale: "We have Mr. Marin here to make a presentation that a number of individuals are here to see. I apologize to every one of you for the behavior [blah, blah, blah]"

  2. It seems you have crazy pandering by Dertinger. McHale desperate for Union support to be Executive lets the circus coontinue or possibly is just plain ineffective.

The Union really thinks Dertinger or McHale will treat them better as Executive. What a con. McHale has already cost them more in Health Care costs by pushing Blue Cross.

Once again the Union is setting itself up for a fall.

Sadly Northampton County continues to be the laughing stock of the Lehigh Valley. Doesn't sound like there is enough intelligence on the Council to open a door.

Amazing. Was it as crazy as it sounded?

  3. Very unimpressed. The behavior of Northampton County Council is well known to be unprofessional, childish and more importantly, embarrasing. The voters of Northampton County have only themselves to blame for this. An inept career County employee as Executive and neophytes as council members. Too bad real professionals do not run for and get elected and bring civility to this County. What a disgrace we have now.

  6. Marin gave an abbreviated presentation. Angle asked some tough questions and at this point, the rail study crowd got surly, too. One guy got up, yeloling and screaming, and ran out of there before he could be chucked out. Dertinger, seeing that Angle opposes it, immediately became a rail advocate. It will be part of next year's budget.

  7. I am a little confused at your outrage about the Northampton County Councils treatment of you and Falk. I must admit I was not at the meeting but from what I have pieced together from the papers and you the Council voted unanimously to pass this law which indicates that Falk & Stoffa had been conducting these personnel change improperly. Even Angle, Stoffa’s buddy voted to override the veto which I think is all the proof I need that this was a good thing. So how is it mean spirited to call for Falks resignation.
And when I read that Angle attacked the county employees and called them a bunch of union hats (hacks I’m sure is what he meant to say) I can’t help but wonder if criticisms about you are true. Dirtenger insults Falk and you and he’s a thug, you and Angle insult a whole group of taxpayers and your heroes. You have to be kidding it seems your hate for a few on the council and love for the Angle, Stoffa and Falk are getting in the way of the truth

  8. Bullshit.

Anyone who attempts to justify Dertinger's goofy outburst or council's ambush of a county worker, on the basis of my "hate," simply (a) doesn;t know what the hell is going on or, more likely (b) does know and is simply trying to deflect away from the real issues.

TYhe real issue is not the ordinance. Even Angle agreed to overrifde the veto. The real issue is council's later shabby treatment of a cabinet member. She was asked to resign with no notice or opportunity to be heard. This is both a due process invasion as well as an invasion of the prerogative of the executive.

Moreover, it was done at the instance of a green T-shirted lynch mob.

Government by lynch mob is not good government.

  9. It's a good thing our government is structured to protect against such mobs.

ANGLE ,COUNTY COUNCIL ON THE OTHER HAND HAS ACTED IN GOOD FAITH FOR THE PEOPLE. IT APPEARS MR. STOFFA HAS A DIFFERENT AGENDA. THE VERY PACKAGE MR. STOFFA BENIFITED FROM AS A COUNTY EMPLOYEE HE NOW TRYS TO TAKE AWAY FROM EVERYONE ELSE. HOW NICE OF HIM.IS THAT FAIR? DOES CONNIE SUTTON FALK DESERVE THE RESPECT OF THE EMPLYEES DOESN'T SEEM SO WHEN YOU ACT BEHIND THERE BACKS. HOW CAN AND WHY SHOULD ANYONE TRUST HER OR HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HER?YOU BELIVE IT WAS WRONG TO ASK FOR HER RESIGNATION BUT WHY?IF SHE DOES BACK DOOR DEALS YOU CERTAINLY HAVE NO REASON TO HAVE ANY COINFEDENCE IN HER. AN AREA IN WHICH SHE SEEMS TO BE LACKING.NOW JOHN STOFFA WANTS TO WASTE MORE TAX PAYERS DOLLARS AND DRAG THIS INTO COURT. YOU MEAN THEY CAN'T IRON THIS OUT? WHY DOES EVERYONE RESORT TO NAME CALLING AND PEOPLE BASHING CONTIUNALLY. IT JUST PLAIN WRONG.MR. STOFFA SHOULD OF HIRED YOU BERNIE AS HIS ADVISOR,BUT THEN HE GETS YOUR SERVICES FREE OR DOESN'T HE. CORRUPTION EVERYWHERE. IN A PLACE IT SHOULD NOT EXIST. SUCH A SHAME. VERY DISHEARTING,LEAVES LITTLE BELIEF IN THE SYSTEM AT ALL. NO VOTER CONFIDENCE AT ALL.

  12. Bernie O'Hare just doesn't get it. His mind is closed & he will back Stoffa & that crazy Sutton-Falk whether they are right or wrong. (is there something in it for you O'Hare???) Until you have dealt with Sutton F--K as a county employee with a problem, you have no right to say anything to defend her. She is supposed to be there to help the employees - all you get out of her is that stupid look on her face; never a smile or time of day; she does NOT want to hear what you have to say; & she is going to do whatever she damn well pleases. In my book, this is NOT how an HR director should be. I went to her with a problem & got absolutely no where - she would'nt even take the time. I'm sure whatever her salary is, it is way tooooo much. Get her the heck out of there & get a decent, caring HR director in there that will help the employees & not just sit behind that desk writing or pretending to do work - someone that will deserve his/her salary.

In fact, you seem to have a rough time putting a sentence together. I'm not responding to your typically childish snarks. Tell it to your lynch mob buddies.

  18. bernie,
you know i got no stake in this, and am blissly reading this entry with just a bit of ironic nostalgia.

that being said, why didn't you stand up to angle in years past when he routinely, without due process, introduce and sometimes persuaded council to pass resolutins eliminating people's jobs?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Earlier this year, I went to the courthouse to pay my taxes. It is one of the most unfriendly places I ever visited, and I was there to give them money. First, I called, and the phone rang forever. When I finally got down, it was nearly impossible to find a parking place, and the entrance makes you walk even more. Once I got inside, nobody seemed to know where anything was, and those that knew acted like it was a big pain in the ass to give me directions. Once I got to the tax office, I stood at the counter at least 20 minutes while the ladies pretended I wasn't there.

Now I know why. These unions can be good, but they can also ruin good workers.

  22. Anon 7:52,

Contrary to what you think, Stoffa is his own adviser. He listens tro lots of people, but in the end, makes his own calls. He has only very rarely sought my opinions on some things, and they are very minor things. For example, he asked me about the Liberty Bell because he knew I felt so strongly about it.

I knew John when he was here in Human Services and he and I were friendly. We were actually on the opposite sides of the open space debate and I even called his house once, after he screwed uop and missed a filing deadline, claiming he was probably too busy plowing a field or something. Unfortunately, I later missed a filing deadline myself.

Stoffa gets plenty of advice from Angle, but then he does what he wants. And that's the way it should be.

Chilly in here, isn't it? I can't recall a sinlge time before this particular motion when a person was ever asked to resign, excepting the time when Angle himself was asked to step down. And that doesn't count bc he is on council.

I am aware of efforts to eliminate positions, which is not really the same thing as a motion directed at a specific person. When Dominach had his lapse, there was no motion from council.

The other names I've heard thrown around were either before my time or were done when I was tilting at other windmills.

If there is any inconsistency, it's onlt because I'm not always paying attention. But if a motion were directed at one of Reibman's cabinet officials, and that person was denied notice or an opportunity to be heard, I'd like to think I'd be just as upset.

Unless it were Hickey. He used to put out his cigarettes on my forehead.

  25. Bernie O'Hare - we're not stupid. I know Stoffa's office is on the 3rd floor & I know where Sutton-F--K is too but that means squat. Anyone can have an office. I thought when Stoffa was voted in, there would be an improvement from the Reibman mess but what the heck was I thinking? Stoffa hiring CSF was one BIG mistake. This woman has no class; personality; & doesn't know how to handle employee's situations. I know but you would not know that Bernie O'Hare. You keep shooting off your mouth like you know what it's like - you don't - you do not work for these people like we do & CSF is one obnoxious b---h!!! And that is pretty much the consenus of all the employees. Except maybe those higher-ups that make all the money but the REAL workers know what she's like.

Anon 8:02, I visit the tax office frequently. Sometimes I have to wait 20 minutes, too. Let me tell you why. The people who work there are busy. They are usually on the phone, setting up payment arrangements with other taxpayers. They were not ignoring you.

  28. Anon 8:28,

So what? it's not a popularity contest. She's not there to be your big sister. She's there to do a job and so are you. It's time to drop the "CSF is mean" routine.

For the sake of argument, assume you're absolutely right. That still gives you no right to go out and lynch her. It gives Council no right to demand her resignation via ambush. What happened was a violation of her rights.

Thanks to the precedent set by a mean-spirited council, it could be you next week.

Now since I work there, I've spoken to many employees. While many of them dislike Connie (and I don't know an HR boss who ever was liked), most of these workers share my concern that what the union did, acting in concert with McClure and Dertinger, is despicable. Union presidents like Lorraine Parry should not be talking about "hit lists" in which they are going after other people. Employees should be notified of union meetings instead of just telling a certain few.

I have a lot of respect for John Szabo, and don't believe he would allow the mean-spirited move that occurred two weeks ago. Neither would most county workers. but therer is a green T-shirted lynch mob out there, and that needs to change.

    So does council.

I'll be working on that next year.

  34. I would also like to comment to anon 8:02 regarding the tax office:

Depending on how earlier this year was, the tax office was even busier than it normally is. I work in this office and this is one office that administration has been very laxed in working out the problems lately. This office is terribly underpaid in comparison to other offices getting paid the same or similar amounts, with only1/2 the work we have. As Bernie does say here, we are expected to do very much, know alot, and my input here is for very little. Because of all the problems we've been having over the past few years, trying to be heard upstairs, being ignored, and now with all of this union fiasco, it seems to have gotten even more out of hand, leaving the office 1/2 staffed since the hard-working and dedicated employees tired of being so overstressed in combination of "severely underpaid" they bid to other positions. It is not easy, having only 1/2 an office to do the work, especially when many times we have so much to do even with 11 we're understaffed.

Unfortunately, the person in question on Mr O'Hare's blogs that was asked to resign happens to have an opinion that all we do is look at computer screens all day..........huh, like if that what was all I'd have to do, then the $10.75 an hour would be quite a legitimate amount to make for all the efforts.

No, ma'am, I apologize for any length of time anyone has to wait for assistance in our tax office........we have a supervisor who tries to be very observant of such things to let us know someone is waiting as well.....sometimes the person waiting does need to step up to the counter as well since it is harder to know someone is waiting far off quietly......but it is not the union's fault by any means...........more like it is because of ignorance of our office and position for many years from the county's end, and now turn-around in this dept is at its all-time worst. The couple of new employees already see how ridiculous the work is compared to pay............(of course, it is also ridiculous how certain jobs found their way in our midst as well)............so, perhaps we will have to figure out how to train a few more newbies within a couple months if anyone else decides to find happier ground within county walls??? (Big sigh) Some of us who have been there a while get tired simply of having so much responsibilty of training the new employees (for no extra pay as well mind you) we think maybe it's time for us to leave too................these are just a few thoughts about why "some" of the employees are frustrated now.........like I said it has nothing to do with the union from this office's point of view..........

Oh and by the way I also agree with the union meeting comment......there are many times we feel the union doesn't inform the employees as they should. If they want better attendance and better input, more volunteerism, etc, as a group effort then it would seem to me we should be better informed than we are. Many of us right now are disappointed in this union since at times it "appears" it's not helping...it would be nice if we had more knowledge and input than we do about what is going on. Perhaps its all on purpose---another one of those its all politics and who really cares about employee labor laws???-----just a thought wondering where all of this is going since this is one area I am really not that well educated in...........

  38. In every organization I've worked in or with, the human resources department represents the needs and protects the interests of the employer, not the employee. I have no knowledge of the operations of Northampton County or how Ms. Falk's position was defined, but I would not expect her to be an advocate for the employee; that's the responsibility of the union.

Hey Bernie, Are you dumb or just acting the part? You don't seem to understand what I am saying. CSF? a big sister? Please!!! She is not there to be a BIG sister, she is there to work (as you put it) but most uf us employees don't see the work she should be doing. Do you not understand that she is there to mediate between an employee & a boss but does she? Hell no!!! She just short cuts & will not listen to what an employee has to say. HR director is not for her - she belongs in a corporation in a back cubicle where she has no dealings with people because she certainly has NO people skills. And saying I could be the next to go? If I was going to be out of a job, it would have been 30+ years ago. I actually am a long-time employee that does her job & does it well but for little money. Imagine that! So don't get on your soapbox praising & siding with this b---h! I don't know what the heck Stoffa was even thinking when he hired her but then again, I guess he wasn't thinking just like you're not doing a very good job of listening to "dedicated" employees (not the lynch mob employees).

  44. I'm well aware there are 11 unions in this county, a ridiculously high number that makes it impossible to avoid constant negotiation w/ one union or the next. You all suffer as a result. You really need to do something about that. It is contrrary to your interest.

I'm not coming down on the other union bosses. I don't know them, except for Al, and he's a good guy.

Lorraine Parry is the union boss I heard has a hit list. She's the one who has told employees she will no longer send them emails to advise them when and where meetings will occur. Lorraine Parry in the union boss with a pipeline that seems to only go to Democratic members of council. I've seen her emails going to Dems only. Why is that?

Lorraine Parry is the union boss who told two workers to make sure she came to the meeting because someone was going to be asked to step down. (I am not going to ID those workers). Lorraine Parry, who likes to claim that employees are taxpayers, lives in New Jersey. She does not attend those meetings as taxpayer but as union honcho.

You also have an agent who got up and tried to itimidate Angle at the last meeting, a bald-headed lunkhead with a goatee. What's his name? Justin?

His violent conduct brought a deputy in there. When you can't win an argument with logic, just admit it. Don't resort to violence.

I don't give a shit about that ordinance over the policy manual. Neither does Angle. He even voted to override the veto. But I do give a shit when some lynch mob tries to take over a government. I do get irritated when you idiots let a bunch of mean-spirited pricks on council request someone to resign, even if it is a person you despise. If any of you had half a brain, you'd realize those hangmen will string you up when it suits them.

  45. Bernie, it was orchastrated. I am no fan of Stoffa but the entire union show was a setup.
The fellow you are refering to is indeed the Business agent. Your'e right is name is Justin or Justise something like that. Here is a kicker for you he has already endorsed McHale as County Executive and union members are 'encouraged' to support her.

  46. As to anon 10:26, it absolutly amazes me that there are employees in offices complaining about their pay compared to others offices and the work they do. Unless you have worked in those other offices and have transfered out of them to work in your present office you really have no idea the amount of work those "other" offices are up against, or whether they deserve or not deserve the amount of pay you get. I am a long time county employees and would never judge you or the pay you get for the job you do. We're supposed to be working together not against each other. Every office has it's problems. There is no perfect office.

  47. Ms. McHale will keep promises that Stoffa would not. She has a better record than Stoffa.

    ReplyDelete
  48. How about this promise - "I won't run if Stoffa does?"

  49. Correct me if I am wrong Bernie but the word on the street is Stoffa is not going again. I know he is keeping things close to his vest but a source claims he has cut his cabinet free to search for jobs.
I hear thats why McHale is getting anxious. Apparently her zeal to help the County depends on who is in the field of candidates.

  50. He probably has told his cabinet they are free to look. I don't know that, but I could not blame any cabinet member who wanted to leave after the circus that went on in council, in which a cabinet member was asked to resign.

I don't believe Stoffa has decided but hope he runs again. His job is just getting started. If McHale runs against Stoffa, she gets crushed. If she runs against Grucela, she gets crushed. The only way she wins is if she runs against Nyce, who's not very nice.
