Best Game Ever

Blue Coyote turned me on to this great video for parents with kids or grandchildren playing baseball. Thanks.

  1. oh man! That was awesome. Thanks for sharing that Bernie.

I played little league ball for 8 years and the closest I ever came to that kind of environment was the Parkland League Championship in 1992. Somebody brought a portable speaker system to announce batters as we came to the plate. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.

Baseball is a game of magic and those kids were just exposed to the great magic show of their lives.

  3. I will show this to my little G who is 6 and just started hitting with an aluminum bat. Dad pitches overhand to him and he is really hittin' em out there. He's so excited about baseball!

  5. Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack.

And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by, like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.

  6. my absolute favorite movie. Just reading the lines from James Earl Jones gives me goose bumps.

Thankfully those kids in the video got to experience as players what we all dreamed of experiencing, even if it was pretend. Even the boy at the end of the video who said he wanted to play baseball when he grows up gets it: it is a game of dreams. The oldest of men or the youngest of boys, when they pick up a baseball, a bat or a glove dream those same dreams. The winning pitch. The winning hit. The game saving grab.

Oh what a field of dreams we seek... anybody for a road trip to Iowa?

  7. Outstanding.

A good baseball post always brings me back around. I just want to walk away from my desk and shag flies or take some BP. Thanks Bernie.

Thank Blue Coyote. If the weather holds, I'll be on a baseball field in two hours to watch a bunch of kids.
