Could a Republican Win in Bethlehem's City Controller Race?
BethlehemDem has an interesting report on the city contoller race between Republican Meg Holland (CPA/ABV, CVA, CIA) and Democrat David DiGiacinto (DEM).

You own views are appreciated, especially if they differ from mine. But remember, commenting is a privilege, not a right. I will delete personal attacks or off-topic remarks at my discretion. Comments that play into the tribalism that has consumed this nation will be declined. So will comments alleging voter fraud unless backed up by concrete evidence. Holland should win due to her credentials but she will not even get close. If she really wanted the post she should have changed parties and ran in the primary. If she was not smart enough to know that she deserves to lose. Hell, before Callahan ran for Council he was a Republican. He was smart enough to change parties. Now he is Mayor! If he had not switched he'd be working for the drug company yet..

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tom Foolery. She is obviously the better qualifed of the two. That alone does not equate to votes for a Republican in Bethlehem.

Holland is not a political newcomer. She was the treasurer for the Dave Donio campaign for State Rep against Steve Samuelson in 2004. I just found that out this morning.
Voters who equate party affiliation with being qualified deserve to be represented by the unqualified. It's why one party systems are characterized by decline.

Electing any Republican is stupid. Eventually they want to move up and they do. Eventually they are representing us on a much bigger stage and out come the right wing views of the facist right. Happens all the time.

Mad As Bats- Some may think those are the D's. I was referring to the division within the Democratic Party in the city.
ReplyDeleteAnon 12:31- I have heard rumors. DiGiacinto is closely tied to Schweder. So I do not think it is out of the realm of possibility that Callahan could quietly support Holland.
It will be a shame if someone with Meg Holland's qualifications and experience does not get elected in the City of Bethlehem even though she is a republican... she is in the city's best interest.

It is my understanding that the ratio today is more than 2 to 1 Democrats to Republicans. People can look at me as a Republican-Democrat. I was a registered Democrat for over 25 years and my parents (Bob and Marie Holland) were active Democrats. My father was very involved in Congressman Fred B. Rooney’s campaign and President John F. Kennedy’s campaign. I remember wearing the JFK campaign hat during the late night election results with my brothers and sisters in 1960. I changed parties six years ago to support my brother-in-law, David Donio, who is Republican. He was running for State Representative and I was his Campaign Finance Chair.
Since I always vote for the candidate who is most qualified for the position, I did not see a need for a particular party alliance. As I said before, the Controller position should be non-partisan, a “watchdog” of the finances for the taxpayers. Actually, with a Democratic Mayor and a majority Democratic Council a Republican Controller would be a more appropriate watchdog.

ReplyDeleteBernie -- Maureen Holland Schaeffer (one of Meg Holland's twin daughters) -- We are all working very hard on this campaign and it frustrates me to see some of the posts because I know that my mom will do an outstanding job and frankly I think everyone is going to be surprised by the outcome of this election. The city of Bethlehem is lucky to have someone as qualified and experienced as my mom running for the position.
