LVNews Features McClure Call Concerning Dixie TIF

I told you last week that NorCo Exec Tara Zrinski supported a tax break for 409 luxury apartments at Wilson Borough's vacant Dixie Cup factory. Despite her support, the tax break failed. One of the No votes came from Council member Theresa Fadem, who stated from the dais that part of the reason for her No vote was because she felt pressured by a telephone call that former NorCo Exec Lamont McClure made to Fadem's boss. He was very reluctant to speak about it with me but was a little more forthcoming in a story published by Lehigh Valley News yesterday. Before I get into that, I want to tell you how Zrinski reacted.

During the meeting, and after the TIF had failed, Zrinski was passing out papers to Council members concerning two new positions she was seeking (and later got) at Gracedale. When she approached Fadem, she reported apologized to Fadem. According to another Council member, who was in earshot, Zrinski said she was sorry about what had happened to Fadem and was unaware that McClure had called her boss. Zrinski obviously recognizes that, whatever the intention, the telephone call was highly inappropriate and was designed to pressure Fadem.

Now let's look at what McClure said to Lehigh Valley News.

He claims he decided to call Hellertown, which has nothing to do with any TIF and is miles away from Wilson Borough because Borough Manager Cathy Hartranft would "understand the municipal perspective."

I could see his nose grow an inch or two when he offered this lame excuse. Whether Hartranft would or would not understand has no bearing at all on what Wilson Borough, located 10 miles away, was seeking. It is clear to me that McClure called Hartranft in an attempt to pressure Fadem.

McClure denies knowing that Fadem is employed by Hellertown. That's nonsense as well. McClure knew the background of every candidate who ran for county council last year. You can add another inch to that nose.

Then McClure went on to say that Fadem is a "very close ally" of Council member Lori Vargo Heffner, whom he despises because she only went along with about 90% of what he wanted when he was Exec.

Wait a second. McClure out of one side of his mouth claims that Fadem is a "very close ally" of Vargo Heffner, but out of the other side of his mouth has no idea where she works.

Add another inch to his increasingly prominent proboscis.

Finally, he claims that Vargo Heffner has endorsed Ryan Crosswell, one of his rivals in the Pa. 07 Congressional race.

Add another inch.

Vargo Heffner has endorsed no one. She is President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women, which makes no endorsements in contested Democratic primaries. She told me that she thinks it would be improper for her to endorse anyone, not even the sole woman in that race, Carol Obando-Derstine.

It is very clear to me that McClure's call to Hellertown's Borough Manager was designed to pressure Fadem, and this is consistent with his past behavior.

I also want to draw attention to the last sentence of the Lehigh Valley News story, which notes in passing that all three taxing bodies must approve a TIF before it can move forward. That is untue. Two of the taxing bodies can still moving ahead, which is exactly what happened with the Hamilton Crossings project in 2014. The County said No, but the township and school district moved forward without county participation.

  1. His comments amount to horsehit! He was calling as some sort of discussion? He is an executive level employee of the county and can do nothing? Zirisnki can prove herself by dumping him.
He is doing what he has always done, bully and intimidate.

Would not be a bit surprised if he was somehow tied to the zombie mailer he? did for congress. It claims he is PROGRESSIVE, he is as progressive as Nero.
It is time his nasty games and tactics get called out. As well as the gang that supports him. Now Zirinski is complaining about the budget she inherited. Councill should have raised taxes last year instead of handing her this headache.

  3. The true McClure is exposed. He’s unfit for Congress and should step down as solicitor. Who knows how many others he has bullied with his title. I bet there’s more he’s trying to hide.

Why is Zrinski apologizing if she had nothing to do with McClure’s actions and had no idea what had happened until that meeting?

This isn’t something you get to whisper away. As I said yesterday, at a minimum Zrinski should be putting out a public statement to let the public know that such actions are reprehensible, have no place in county government and that she had nothing to do with it.

She doesn’t even have to name McClure but she needs to be clear that this sort of activity has no place in her Administration.

I suspect she won’t do that because the whole thing was her idea and it will come out that she was the one who asked McClure to make the call to Hellertown.

    1. Honestly, I am not a Tara supporter in the least bit. She is way far left for me. Having said that, my guess is she gave the apology because she knew what Lamont did, and she knew it was wrong. Just because I disagree with her political positions doesn't mean she's a bad person. Maybe not the best or most experienced person for County exec, but she doesn't seem mean or a bully like Lamont is.

    2. Bingo. Tara had the decency to recognize that McClure's call, which was obviously made for no reason other than to pressure Fadem, was totally inappropriate. He had no reason to call Hartranft. He could have called Fadem directly, but chose to bully her instead. This was clearly wrong. The fact that it backfired on him is no excuse for his conduct, and his explanations are ridiculous.

    3. There is two words that comes to mind: Fool’s Gold.

Zrinski is very prolific in creating a shiny luster however that luster lacks substance. She’s is nothing but self-serving.

  10. I’ve gotta tell you, Bernie. You were dead wrong in some of your earlier attacks against President Trump and his administration’s policies. You are obviously hiding all information indicating huge election irregularities across this nation that surely justify citizen suspicion about election integrity.

BUT, your coverage about local political shenanigans is absolutely fantastic! You are doing the responsible and necessary work once handled by our local news media, the Morning Call, TV69, etc. The corporate outlets have pretty much refused to mix it up with misbehaving government officials, especially Democrats, who seem to always fly under their radar.

Independent journalists, small responsible investigators and certain bloggers (not including that Allentown has-been) are where it’s at these days.

Congratulations on trying to fill a real void in local political coverage.

  14. Fadem exaggerated her story, possibly lied, and is acting like a victim and all you are focusing on is McClure's call as a citizen with no authority to threaten her on any level. Fadem in the article I read said she wasn't pressured.
I think your story should be how she overreacted and acted like Lori's flying monkey doing her dirty work.

  15. “County Councilwoman Theresa Fadem last week said McClure — who served as county executive until January — called her boss in an apparent attempt to intimidate her into voting for a tax increment financing district that could have sent about $26 million to a private developer across two decades.”
    1. McClure has no power over her or her boss, or the municipal board. So is Fadem paranoid or delusional?
    2. She stated that she “would have entertained a direct call from McClure and believed the former executive was wrong to call. Hartranft”. Actually she LOVED that McClure called someone she knew because she had a fleeting moment of feeling important!
Just because Fadem thought that McClure‘s conversation with her boss was ‘inappropriate and unacceptable’ and ‘clearly a breach of professional boundaries’ doesn’t mean that’s true, but you sure love this juicy story Bernie because it’s going to get you so many clicks that you might get rich this week!
It may have been true if he was an elected official and still the county executive, but he’s not he’s just a citizen like everybody else so it’s not true. It’s just her perception. And let’s not forget that she was contemplating the vote because she was contemplating that there were benefits to support Dixie and then because of McClure‘s call to her boss she decided to definitely vote no?! So she was contemplating the benefits for the people of Wilson, but because McClure called her boss then she was like, ‘yeah screw the people of Wilson. I’m going to vote no because McClure called Hardtrandt and I feel threatened’. What a freaking baby! If I lived in Wilson I would be so pissed.

She might have got some push back for the PFDW because of Carol, but she’s definitely a Crosswell supporter. Saw it with my own eyes.

  19. I’m trying to get this straight. Fadem says she wasn’t intimidated by her Boss telling her about her conversation with Lamont. Then why did she say she was at the Council meeting ? Is she lying now, or was she lying then ?

It's a centrist purple district, not a progressive one. I am reconsidering him now.
