Pa. 7th Congressional Race and Prediction Markets

If you look at prediction markets like Polymarket, Bob Brooks is running away with the Democratic nomination in the Pa. 7th Congressional district currently held by Ryan Mackenzie.  Based on nearly $12,000 of bets, Brooks has a 69% chance of winning while other candidates are getting trounced. Ryan Crosswell is at 23%, Lamont McClure comes in at 8% while Carol Obando-Derstine gets a scant 2%.  But this is all nonsense and I'll tell you why.

First, these prediction markets are highly susceptible to campaign insiders who will pour money into them to create the illusion that a candidate is running away with a race. In the Pa 7th, for example, Crosswell has dipped 27%, McClure has dropped 42% and Obando-Derstine is down 47% since betting started. This is just ridiculous. There is no way that voters move that dramatically. But people associated with campaigns do. It is clear that the Brooks and Croswell campaigns have spent some of the money they raised to create a false narrative.

Second, Obando-Derstine, the only woman in this race is predicted to have just a 2% chance of winning. Anyone who follows Democratic politics should know that there are many Democrats who will crawl through barbed wire to vote for a woman precisely because she is a woman. In the last municipal NorCo Council race, one woman was top vote getter despite getting no support from the trade unions. Another woman won despite mounting no campaign and spending no money. In this climate, it is absurd to suggest that Obando-Derstine has a mere 2%.

Third, Lamont McClure, a two-term NorCo Exec and before that, a long-time member of county council, is easily the most well-known of the four candidates. Until very recently, Brooks actually supported McClure. Croswell was a Republican prosecutor who never lived in the Lehigh Valley. Obando-Derstine had no involvement with the public whatsoever and was and remains relatively unknown. The only candidate that Democrats actually might know is McClure. To suggest he's running at 8% is preposterous.

I can see why Congress is growing concerned about prediction markets.

On top of everything else, Brooks' chances of winning are probably declining as negative stories begin to circulate about him. I've written about the way Brooks stiffed his in-laws over land and money they provided for him to build a home. He failed to repay a dime of the money they lent him, and his mother-in-law had to sue for a $130,000 judgment that Brooks refuses to pay. I've also told you about a lawsuit recently filed by Attorney David Dunn, claiming that Brooks engaged in subterfuge and possible fraud when he supposedly conveyed his interest in marital property to his current wife, while still refusing to repay his debt. I've also reported on his failure to list his judgment when he filed his financial disclosure. He's shady.

These negative stories have been spreading to other media outlets, including Alternet, Spotlight Pa and Lehigh Valley News. A candidate with this kind of negative attention does not rise 20% in polling, but could rise in a prediction market when his own campaign does the betting.

It's what I'd expect from a shady person.

  1. We’ve reached a point in America where it is impossible to determine what’s really going on, what’s accurate, or not, nor truth from fiction.

Lying and dirty tricks are EVERYWHERE. Morals and ethics . . . forget about it.

One cannot view or hear second-hand interpretations coming from anyone, any source, etc. with complete faith in the accuracy of those messages projected.

  2. Your adoration of your boy McClure is boundless. Why not expound on his implicit deficit he created for political gain and how his policies have damaged Gracedale. He has done what Angle and Stoffa could not. He has basically set Gracedale on a path of failing, why few of their retirees love the guy is a mystery. Speaking for retires tell people how he screwed them over by ignoring the recommendations of the auditor You keep on braying on Brooks family issues. While ignoring Your boy's narcissistic disasters.

  5. You say McClure is well known. Yes, he is well known has being terrible. I will do everything I can in letting voters know how terrible he is. He was horrible during his reign as NC Executive. He treats people like crap. He runs on things and never comes through. He lies. And sooooooo much more. NO WAY HE SHOULD BE IN CONGRESS!!!!!!!

    1. McClure’s job was to serve the Northampton County taxpayers, not the employees.
      Many employees support him.
Those who hated their jobs were free to leave.

    2. Employees are taxpayers. If the employees aren't treated fairly, they are not going to do the best work for the taxpayers. Many longtime, good employees left. Who are you kidding, he didn't serve the taxpayers. He served himself only!

  8. Prediction markets are not polls. They simply pick winners and losers. Regardless of the margin of victory, Brooks looks like a lock to win the nomination and the general. That could change and the markets will reflect it as we draw closer to the elections. Hillary ran out to a large lead in prediction markets, only to be caught by Trump. Last time polls showed Kamala with a puncher's chance. Prediction markets accurately showed Trump winning comfortably. It's important to observe the velocity of betting as the election draws near. Big bets abd big money go out first. Smaller money in higher volume happens toward the end.

  9. Brooksy is a Crooksy.
Crosswell is MAGA in sheep's clothes.
Obando-Derstine is invisible and has no substance.
McClure has the elected political experience, experience fighting AND winning against MAGA AND Trump, he knows NC and LC better than anyone, and he has the brains and guts!

Crooksy has the big endorsements merely because those big wigs wanted the fireman's endorsement, NOT because he is worthy. Crooksy steals from family!

    1. Brooks has the endorsement of Bernie Sanders. That won’t help in the Lehigh Valley.
Sanders has never done anything. He’s a distraction, no more.

  10. My God does he pay you to write this BU--SHIT. Lamont is truly the worst person for this or any office again. He ran gracedale and the county of northampton into the ground financially and not to bring up the staffing issues at the other departments in the county. Don't get started on morale in the county. Lol.
But write an article to make your big buddy feel good. This man ran the county into the ground and God willing he won't get the chance to run the nation into the same.
And for all you people that are gonna say " just quit " that is happening and when you get slammed with that tax hike next year remember 1 thing and 1 thing only. It is a Lamont Mcclure tax hike.

  11. The Borking Boob is shadier than Trump. Of the Democrat side, the only one who's normal and has a real connection to the Lehigh Valley is McClure and he's in a tougher fight than he thought. Democrats may crawl through barbed wire to support a woman, yes, anyone propped up by Stooge-an Wild, who did absolutely nothing for PA-7 other than to bob her head 'yes' with the party line, like a should be avoided at all costs.

  12. I was at the Bus Matters forum. My takeaway from this forum only.
    1) McClure
    2) Brooks just doesn’t have the experience of McClure
    3) Crosswell he’s a Republican who moved here to run
    4) Obando- Derstine Should honestly withdraw. Nice person, nothing personal. But all she seems to have is being an immigrant.

  13. McClure left a mess at Gracedale before running away. There's still no accounting for the $400K for employee retention. His performance during covid ranged from stupid to ineffectual. I don't know the answer. But it's time for him to remain in the rear-view mirror. He's not worthy.

Imagine a McClure / McKenzie debate. Ryan’s corner would throw in the towel quickly. Will he have the nerve to show up?

  17. Let me answer that question. My opinions are my own, and no one pays me for what I write. I do support McClure among these four Democrats even though I disagree with him on many things. I tend to think he is a bit too partisan and I would have been far more generous to the county employees. He certainly made mistakes over 8 years, but he did many things right. He kept taxes low. He kept the county open during COVID when most government offices were closed. He probably saved lives with what he did at Gracedale. He was the first to recognize the need for protective clothing and created an isolation wing for people suffering from the virus. He brought in the national guard when staffers became ill or were themselves unable to come in bc COVID was spreading thru their families. He installed an air filtration system that eliminated airborne viruses at the courthouse. He came up with a creative way for the county to purchase the human services building and have the state pay for it. He helped landlords continue to collect rent and provided grants to over 1,000 (might be more) small businesses. He purchased acres and acres of land for county parks and farmland. He fought against tax handouts for warehouses. He took a cooperative approach with ICE that enabled them to do their job without violating the rights of people. He was unpopular with employees, but no county exec is popular until he's gone. Then people begin to say he wasn't so bad and hate on whoever succeeds him. He is well known in the LV and is the most familiar of the four candidates and has the best chance to defeat Mackenzie.

Crosswell was a Republican who changed sides and is more familiar in DC circles among the insiders than he is in the LV. He only moved here to run. Obando-Derstine was a PPL bigshot who had no interest in politics until Wild picked her to run. During forums, she has been the least knowledgeable. And Brooks actually supported McClure before being recruited by Shapiro to run as Shapiro's puppet and is actually a Trumper. He is supported by Shapiro so Shapiro can get his hands on firefighter union money. He is completely untrustworthy, a shady character who couldn't even be honest in his congressional disclosure and refuses to pay a judgment even though he has the funds.

McClure is really the only choice, but prediction markets are being manipulated to portray Croswell and Brooks as having support they do not have. It is dishonest.

    4. Prediction markets aren't being "manipulated". The small amount of money bet there could signify bettors believing that Croswell's money is a sign of support, or Brooks endorsements.

If you are confident Lamont is the leader, you can currently win a dollar by betting 5 cents that Lamont will win. I didn't check the order book to see how many nickels you can buy at this price.

Prediction markets encourage smart money to take dumb money.

  18. Questions Brooks has to answer. Why did you transfer your property out of your name into your second Wife’s ? Why did your second Wife sign her name to the Quitclaim Deed where your Ex-Wife should have signed ? Why did you do this transfer one month after you were ordered by a court to pay your Ex-Mother-in-law $130,000.00 ? Did you intentionally undervalue your property to avoid paying the judgment to your Ex-Mother-in-law ? Why did your second Wife borrow $330,000.00 on the property immediately after having it transferred to her ? If it was to support your landscaping and snow removal business, why go through all of these potentially fraudulent transactions to do it ? These are all questions he’s going to have to answer in the civil deposition.

  22. Of course prediction markets are being manipulated. Yesterday, nearly $12 k had been spend, and the race was Brooks - 69, Croswell - 23, McClure - 8, Obando-Derstine -2. In just one day, with about $100 more dumped in to either vote No or Yes, the race is Brooks - 65, Croswell - 31, McClure - 3, Obando-Derstine - 2. People do not change that quickly in one day. But campaigns do. This is being manipulated by the Brooks and Croswell campaigns.
