Donald Trump and the Pottery Barn Rule

Last night, President Donald Trump addressed the nation about the decision, along with Israel, to attack Iran. It was an address that should have been given 32 days ago. While I completely agree that this use of force is entirely justified and overdue, I find Trump's use of hyperbole ("No one's seen anything like it") to be a bit over the top. His claim that Iran's ability to project force has been decimated, but that's contradicted by the missile and drone attacks that have continued. Three weeks ago, Hegseth announced that Iran's firepower has been reduced by 90%. But those missiles and drones keep coming. Nobody has seen anything like it. On top of that, Trump has claimed we'll be out of there in two weeks or so and has incredibly asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will "open naturally." I've never seen anything like it.

Is he out of his mind? What we have done is given Iran permission to use Hormuz both as a toll both and as a way to strangle world commerce. Trump forgets the pottery barn rule. You break it, you fix it or pay for it. He bragged about the families of fallen soldiers who told him to finish the job but apparently plans to leave without doing so.  He won't pay. We will.

I've never seen anything like it.

  4. We aren't energy independent after all. We are export dependent. Also, there are millions to be made off his daily remarks, only if we knew when and what he would say. The markets and our 401ks are at the mercy of his commentary. I suppose that is OK if you are independently wealthy.

Midterm elections cannot come fast enough.

  5. Your TDS is flaring up again Bernie. Obama and Hilary instigated and tore up the middle east with regime changing color revolutions/wars. Multiple failed states still exist to this day from their little foray. Funny... I don't remember hearing your concerns then or even now? Blather on...

  6. The Pottery Barn Rule was first cited by Barack Obama before he left Syria in shambles. This was a disastrous adventure. The only positive is it finally put the silly notion of NATO out of its misery. Just ask Ukraine how NATO worked for them. Let Europe fend for themselves.

  7. You've never seen anything like it because four presidents said they'd do something about the mullahs getting nukes with the ability to launch them. Trump finally did. Hell, Obama pretty much handed them the funding for nukes while saying they shouldn't have them. Invading the country is pointless. We learned since 9/11 that radical Islamists are like cockroaches. They can't be destroyed, but they must be sprayed on a regular basis. The country is now in shambles until it rebuilds and must be sprayed again. The pressure is now on filthy rich, shifty Arab neighbors and cowardly Europoors. But at least they can't be nuked for a while, thanks to Trump.

  11. You chide the man for not finishing the job while your Marxist brethren call him a war monger, fascist and racist murderer.

None of it applied when Obama bombed the snot out of 7 Islamic countries or when Clinton slaughtered civilians in Yugoslavia.

You and your ilk are brain dead political bigots, devoid of reason and historical context.

  12. No one truly cares what you think
about Donald Trump, our President. He’s been the only one gutsy enough to deal with Iran (ignoring hasn’t worked, cowering hasn’t work, paying them off has made it worse). Stick to local news. God knows Lehigh and Northampton counties provide enough to pick at.

  14. One of my favorite Trump quotes: "they wanted to destroy the entire Middle East...they wanted to destroy the entire world!" If Iran wanted to destroy the entire world, where would they live?

  15. I’ve studied Donald Trump for more than 50 years. One of his greatest attributes is he doesn’t change who he naturally is just to please his observers. There is nothing phony about the Donald Trump you get.

The man’s been a builder, a developer, and a promoter his entire life. Add in a pinch of entertainer, and this is the Trump people voted for. Why did they vote for him? Because he was clearly a better option than everyone else running against him.

Tonight’s address was typical Trump. One of his goals was to AGAIN clearly state the mission’s objective with Iran. That same objective was already stated even before Day One of the offensive. That is, to prevent that Iran’s barbaric leadership from having nuclear weapons at its disposal. Another goal was to convince our citizens America’s efforts are bringing us to the goal precisely as planned. We are close to wrapping things up and turning everything over to other nations who actually depend upon that access point, and to conduct their commerce through there in a safer environment. America only gets about 5% of its oil through there. We have alternative options.

It should be obvious, no nation can guarantee Iran can never attack sea-going vessels passing by. The advent of sophisticated, hand held weaponry, drones and suicidal maniacs in small watercraft makes such a guarantee impossible.

About the typical Trump hyperbole. That’s always been a part of his persona. Nothing out of the ordinary. Really, is this kind of boasting any different than the garbage coming out of downtown Bethlehem, or its Musikfest? Allentown’s NIZ?

We are getting the Trump most American’s voted for, I believe, THREE times.

  17. The propaganda machine is running full bore from Iran and their allies; augmented by AI-generated stories and images and the American media is not really our the American side, either. And, Russia and China must be supplying Iran with arms. However, it does appear that this was poorly planned. I don't know if Trump bullied the generals and admirals into this and ignored any risk assessments they may have provided. I have more confidence in the US military leaders to have accurate intelligence and full understanding of readiness, capability, and risks than I do in Trump's assessments of the situation. But, Trump likes to think he knows more than his advisors.

And, it's deja-vu all over again. American military bogged down in a fight, we're going to the moon, and massive public protests hitting the streets. Peace out, man. ✌️☮︎

    1. I have no problem with this joint attack and believe it was way overdue. I do not think it was poorly planned at all. The first strikes aimed at command and control (not really execution as Trump and Hegseth brag) and destroying air defense. This enabled us to focus on missile and drone sites and production facilities, and we've done more (I don't quite know how much more is needed) to eliminate the nuclear threat. Iran is weakened but is still incredibly dangerous, as its continued attacks and closure of Hormuz attest. If we leave without eliminating its ability to hurl missiles and close Hormuz, we'll have been there for nothing. And don't blame the Europeans. They were never informed of our intentions and shouldn't be expected to join in. That's just stupid.

  18. It’s Trump being Trump. The fact that’s he done something that was long overdue is a plus. There is still more work to be done. Iran’s ability to launch anything must be eliminated. The fact that the US and Israel is going at it alone is tough. Trump was right when he said months ago he didn’t think NATO would be there if the US needed them. Screw them now. Trump is trying to get countries to help open the Straight and the Arab countries are stepping up. If you’re for this Bernie, ignore Trump being Trump and focus on the end result. It’s a shame democrats aren’t supporting him. Here’s helping all future Presidents Democrats and Republicans from this extreme terrorist couldn’t. Just hating him is ridiculous ,

  19. Bernie, do you still believe that the attack on Iran was warranted after the disastrous effects upon our allies, and our own country?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I do. Iran has been at war with us for quite some time. If it could hit us with a nuke, it would. The impact on us and our allies is mainly the result of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, so we need to ensure that it is open before we leave. I hate the increased gas prices, and the cascading effect it will have on everything else. But it is worth it if we can eliminate this threat to our security and re-open the Strait. I know my opinion is a minority opinion.

    3. No Bernie, can't agree on this one. Poor planning is obvious and he has changed the goal posts so many times the end zone can't be found. He has royally tucked this one up. But maybe Hogsbreath can fire more top commanders, yep, that'll be brilliant! This administration has no clue what its doing.

  21. Bernie you and the Orange nut agree on Justification of attacking a country that has not attacked another country for 250 years had a leader against nuclear weapons. I am confused who has military bases surrounding who. The Iranians are not the fanatics you portray them as. We have lasted 250 years maybe not much longer. They have lasted 3000 years without being displaced. We only support dictatorships in the middle east and an apartheid state.

  24. He had the guts that 7 Presidents lacked, so I respect him for that. He put NATO on notice, we pay 75% of their budget, and we can't keep carrying them forever. He's authentic- his stance on Iran for the last 47 years hasn't changed. You just don't get it- after everything that everything that was/is thrown at him, he was elected twice as President. I don't always agree with him, but he has the best political instincts of any politican I've ever seen and is the most consequential President in my lifetime.

  25. He is the most careless, selfish, power hungry, narcissistic morons to ever lie and cheat his way through life. He is responsible for death and destruction of sons and daughters, fathers, and uncles in a war HE chose, not anyone else. He has LOST trust of our world allies in NATO that will never be repaired. As he did his other 50 businesses, he will bankrupt our country to fund his OWN military force. So yes, he is the MOST consequential negative impacting person in our lives.
