Nazareth Baker Seeks State House Seat

Nazareth may be a small town, but it has no shortage of bakeries. Just in Nazareth proper, there are three. Schubert's is where everyone goes for Moravian sugar cake. The Pie Shop (now on Main St)  has the best pasties in the Lehigh Valley. And then there's Cozze Cakes. It's a shop that specializes in elegant wedding and birthday cakes. Marie Antoinette would say, "Let them eat cake."  Owner Amy Cozze would say, "Let everyone eat cake," but she knows someone has to bake it. She wants to take her baking skills to Harrisburg, and is announcing today that she is a candidate for the State House.

She's running in the 137th Pa legislative district, which was gerrymandered to keep Democrat Rich Grucela out of office. It includes parts of Palmer Township and several slate belt communities. But it also includes Forks Tp, Upper Nazareth and Nazareth. It's designed precisely for someone like Joe Emrick. He is one of the few Lehigh Valley legislators who has refused to endorse any legislative attempt to slay the gerrymander.

What does a baker know about politics? Hopefully, nothing. Cozze is a University of Pittsburgh grad who majored in psychology and minored in business. After several years in the business sector, she opened up a business of her own in 2012. While 90% of startups fail, she has thrived in a community that obviously likes to eat. She understands small business. She'd like to be their advocate in Harrisburg. She'd also like to see positive changes related to healthcare, education and the environment.

Cozze has been a member of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber for the past five years, and a board member of the Nazareth Business Council for the last two years. Most recently, she was appointed as liaison for the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee.

She told The Morning Call that state legislators have "catered to the larger corporations and conglomerates and it’s put them out of touch with Main Street America. They don’t seem to have the interests of the middle class in mind any more.”

Why should someone like Joe Emrick care about the middle class? In 2016, he raised $108,000 in cash and in-kind contributions against a weak candidate. He doesn't have to bake cakes. But in case he hasn't noticed, a blue wave is rising in Pennsylvania. It started in last year's municipal races, and has been helped along by Authoritarian Donald Trump.

Cozze knows a good cake starts with good ingredients. So should a state legislature.

On a personal note, she is a wife, mother to two wonderful boys and a breast cancer survivor. She's also Lehigh Valley native.

Think "ABE" for the 137th! Anyone But Emrick-ABE! Rid ourselves of the narcistic jerk emrick. The "I am already getting a school teacher pension so Ill suck another out of you Mr. Taxpayer" and his over the top arrogant jerk attitude needs to go! I am one Republican and my family included looking forward to voting for this fresh breath of air and a real worker for people! Republicans for Cozze! we need top rid ourselves of Mr. Joe "Trump Ego" Emrick

While you're at it, let's vote do nothing panderer Marcia Hahn out too! It's time for change!

Get Boscola out first.

Neither Emrick or Hahn have supported HB722 which while not perfect would create an independent redistricting authority. They are both puppets of party leadership and only pay lip service to the people they should be representing.

Democrats will redraw the next map and it will likely be the same shit show that it currently is, but only in reverse. Why Emrick, Hahn and more importantly Republican leaders are dragging ass on this issue is just baffling.

Neither Hahn nor Emrick belongs in office. Neither is particularly transparent. Both really are puppets and back benchers. They lack the courage to stand against the gerrymander. Democrats have run very weak candidates against them in the past. You can't win when you are in foreclosure or have all kinds of financial woes.

Cocce is ten times better than what I have seen in past races. She has great support from people like Ann Marie Panella and Dr. Paige Van Wirt.

At a glance, I think she could do better.

We have weak representatives in the local districts. Emrick is the worst politician in the area- arrogant and lazy. He never had strong competition- unless, you think "1 vote" Joe Capozzolo was formidable. Hahn is only there because she was Craig Dally's secretary. I think you said it best Bernie- they're both back benchers. Cocce is a breath of fresh air.

Everything you say about Hahn and Emrick can be said about Bob Freeman. Hell, many thought he passed away years ago. Talk about a space filler. The entire legislature is filled with invisible check takers. It's the worst in the country and should be cut in half.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Not really. Bob Freeman is a sponsor to gerrymander reform. He introduces numerous bills that go nowhere bc he is in the minority. But i’ll agree he has learned to keep his head down and not make waves. We have few leaders.

Does she live in the 137th district? The business is located in the 137th, but does she.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Why she lives in Upper Nazareth. Do you honestly think she would be running if she did not live here?

The democrat's stole Mitt Romney's health plan and the "blue Wave" has got his "binders".

Good luck to her, she seems like a real trend setter.

PA Supreme Court has found that all Congressional Districts need to be redrawn because of gerrymandering.

I wonder if she was ever a model. The pose she strikes with arched back, accentuating her bosom is taught to professional models. That is by no means bad but it may turn off some women.

Anonymous said...

Really? I didn't notice. (hehe)

Bernie O'Hare said...

She is beautiful, but you folks know I don't care for comments about physical attributes, especially since I am ridiculously handsome myself. It's not easy. Judge her on the issues, not her physical appearance.

"may turn off some women." - 7:20PM

Yup...if the plot called for a cat fight, she'd be central casting's first choice.

Lots of female unity going on right now... who knows what it will look like when the "men" in charge think it's time for a little "MeToo" in-fighting.

When I look in the dictionary for the word "chickmagnet" your picture is right there. You are cursed with bubbling charm and incredible good looks. Now if we could only find a "hula hoop" that would fit you.

It's not easy. I cry myself to sleep every night. I'd love to be ugly for just one day. I'll assk Steve Barron what it's like all the time.

Leftist women are deluding themselves. Those districts will stay Republican. They forget that most white women voted for Trump. They loved him then they love him.
They do not subscribe to the gender centric politics the leftist fems are pushing. Reality will return this year.

Id vote for you BO then for Lazy Ego Emrick. and I also a republican know Joe Emrick is running scared even being opposed cause he knows that his performance as a DO NOTHING is gonna come out. He sucked as a school teacher and sucks as a representative. Joe? give Rick Grucela a call and ask him for some lessons on what your suppose to be doing. That high priced new office space that you are paying the rent with my money is not getting you votes but the northern belt north of Bangor will be the votes Cozze needs to get you out. The days of ass kissing Bangor High buds are not the makeup of UMBT, LMBT etc.... give Rich a call

She sounds spectacular, thanks for posting about her. I wish her the best, we need more like her to end what greed has brought to our country. Well, greed and stupidity.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I just deleted a comment that engages in name calling of Emrick but offered nothing. Please, if you have nothing to say that contributes to the discussion, go away.

Grucela was not forced out of anything. His time was up and except for this blog people were done with him. He fed at the trough for a long, long time.

The pink pussy hats will be disappointed this coming Fall. Most women are not femanazzis.

Can you imagine how trivial men marching in protest with symbolic penises on their heads would seem?

It's clear to me, "the pink pussy hats" idea, was that of a right-wing infiltrator, it's to perfectly embarrassing for those sympathetic with the cause, to just not take it serious.

These women are in for a reality lesson this Fall.
