Racism at Allentown Art Museum?

That's the perception of Muhlenberg undergrad Rachel Brudner. She and her class visited Allentown Art Museum recently for a tour about the Latino presence in American art. She was disturbed enough by what the tour guide said that she posted a blog about it at Odyssey.

Though Rachel claims to be upset by the "things that actually came out of the mouth" of her tour guide, she acknowledges she has few direct quotes. She fails to identify the tour guide, who might dispute or add context to some of Rachel's perceptions.

One of the examples of bias she cites is the tour guide's inability to use the words "Latino" and "Hispanic" properly. Gimme a break, Rachel. To preach that this is evidence of bigotry is to display the very kind of political correctness that just drives people nutz. Some just honestly get confused. Trust me on that one, Rachel.

But Rachel cites plenty of other examples that indicate that the Allentown Art Museum's exhibit has failed to awaken this tour guide's sensitivity to those who are different.

In response to Rachel's story, the Allentown Art Museum responds that it "does not condone such sentiment, ideas, or language. We are deeply disturbed that such comments as you described in your post have been associated with this museum. This is neither what we stand for nor what we are willing to tolerate."

But id what Rachel is saying is accurate, then that's precisely what these artsy-fartsies are doing.

Seems like ultra liberal Rachel is a thin-skinned member of the PC police. She is only reflecting the pablum fed to her by our modern public school system, reinforced by her leftist Muhlenberg education.

Liberals are the worst racists there are. Look at what Hillary said about Trump supporters. She's not alone, Liberals in the Arts community are the same snob, look down the nose types.

Give them their cheese and wine along with the money. The unwashed degenerates are the little people anyway. They don't contribute to the arts so screw them.

real tangible racism is evident everywhere.

i have found, however, that middle class college students often look a little too hard for it, and see it when it's not really there

There is no place for art in a free society.

I guarantee that Ms. Rachel comes from a very upper class, highly suburban family that only passes through the inner cities and their ghettos and does nothing for the families that survive in these places. Her liberal arts training, [at approximately $40,000 per year], at a very liberal and very rich private college, entitles her to this subjective view of the impoverished latino and hispanic population. Spend your four years of college living in the ghettos and then proceed to tell mainstream America about your qualified opinions!

How mature you are to attack this young lady anonymously.

" Look at what Hillary said about Trump supporters."

When I read the Trump supporters on this blog, most of the comments are deplorable, full of hatred, racism, xenophobia and misogyny. While it is wrong to make generalizations, and Clinton acknowledged her error, those who got worked up about it doth protest too much.

Oh her non-apology apology. She's said it several times before. However, to keep the subject focused to the Art Museum, it's full of snobs who don't want to associate with the lower classes. They're worse than the Trexler Trust. The Trust is supposed to keep the parks up and they don't, but insure the trust is well-funded. The Art Museum types are more interested in insuring that the Museum gets donations rather than outreach to the general public.

Man, I remember when I was a Muhlenberg undergrad being talked about on Lehigh Valley Ramblings! (Mostly about College Democrats, although I don't think the post about me exists anymore. Maybe I am misremembering since it was a long time ago! But I'll always have this gem: http://lehighvalleyramblings.blogspot.com/2009/02/muhlenberg-college-dems-like-damore.html )

Anyway, A link to an article would have been helpful for context. But I think the crux of the debate is about the definition of Racism right? In most liberal and academic environments, Racism is a lot more complicated than just hating someone because of the color of their skin.

In Progressive circles, "racism" is the common term that is used when they are not agreed with. Therefore, the person who doesn't agree with them is obviously a racist

I rarely agree with Bernie O'Hare but come on people. You can cry about the "hate" of Progressives but the crap that is posted here about Clinton and others is dripping with hate. I don't know if it is frustration and anger with your lot in life and needing someone or something to blame other than yourselves or you are just miserable. However, the venomous hate and vitriol from people who claim to be Trump supporters is horrible. By the way id Clinton was ,"speaking her mind and "telling it like it is" should you not be praising her?

I do remember being in college and thinking I knew all things, it is a common aliment amongst young people. So I would not be too harsh with the young lady.

O'Hare, you call people bigots when your own prejudice has accepted this young woman's OPINION versus investigating the facts. You have a deep hatred for people you like to designate as privileged, "artsy-fartsy" types. What a stereotype. You despise people who are successful and contribute to society since you are just the opposite. Have achieved nothing, and have given nothing back to the community except for your sorry, narcistic blog.

I made clear that I was reporting the perception of a Muhlenberg undergrad. That's why my title contains a question mark, uses the word "perception," points to the dearth of direct quotes, questions the legitimacy of one of her complaints and publishes a response from the Museum. My story was quite fair. You make very clear exactly who is filled with hatred. Take a Xanax.
