Opinions Online, 8/20/16

Blogger's Note: Opinions Online is a regular Saturday feature. If you'd like to express your opinion on any topic, click on the Opinions Online button on my left sidebar. You can also call 385-325-2564. In addition to these submissions, I sometimes highlight comments from throughout the week and re-publish them here. Please keep your comments brief, if possible.

**********

Musikfest: Should Musikfest at least consider making a portion of its festival alcohol & smoke free?

**********
Joanne Jackson: Bernie - Please investigate the Joanne Jackson campaign. She is in the process of having an illegal fundraiser next week.

Blogger's Reply: I am unable to tell whether that is true until a campaign finance report is filed.

**********

Dirt Bikes in Allentown? Interested in knowing if any other reader's have noticed the illegal dirt bike motorcycles flying down main streets the last few weeks in Allentown. Spotted some of these clowns driving right down Lehigh St. at night with no lights on. The only way the police are catching these kids is with dirt bikes of their own or helicopters.

**********

Keystone Collections: Got to love Keystone Collections. I went in person to pay my per capita tax, but forgot that they moved to 378 in Lower Saucon (by the way they left no sign with where they moved to). No big deal I said, I will just pay it online. Went to pay it online and they are charging a processing fee (mine was a dollar). Normally I understand this , but I think it is BS here since they are collecting taxes.I paid it anyway since I want a receipt. I got the following confirmation message "Please note this is not an official receipt, but rather a confirmation record of your intent to pay with the account info listed below". What the hell? You cant get me an actual receipt after I paid your processing fee!

Don't even get me started on a private contractor collecting taxes for government entities that still have tax offices.

Political Corruption:

http://observer.com/2016/08/class-action-lawsuit-against-debbie-wasserman-schultz-moves-forward/ cause I know you like her so very much (snark Snark ) how about Kane? and Castor and now Castor's out and Beemer's back in and what about the Gansler's investigation - we are all in this mess together that is a FOR Sure have a great weekend.

**********

Time for the FBI to arrest Fed Ed already! Throw some more of these crooks in the slammer!

**********

In what might be a record week for hubris among mayors, sources say Pawlowski is going to run for A'town mayoral re-election AND Strye finally applies for ARD but still refuses to resign.

While FedEd lumbers on posting that everything is peachy on facebook, mator sticky fingers keeps rubbing the community's nose in it by giving everyone updates on his summer follies.

I realize summers are for vacation, but does this guy ever work? It seems to me that now would be a prime time to sell car wash systems.

**********

I read in the Morning Call that Ed Pawlowski is going to run for a fourth term as mayor of Allentown. despite the FBI investigation of him and his activities while in office

This is just like Hillary Clinton running for President. Would you believe that someone with her record of lying and corruption along with several FBI investigations would actually have the gall to run for President?

She and Pawlowski are like peas in the same pod.

Well, they're both from Chicago and both Democrats. What do you expect ? Honesty in government ?

**********

Why are no Presidential candidates in LV? - One has to wonder how important politically the Lehigh Valley is since none of the candidates for President have visited here. Enough about Scranton Pa. already. Also may show the folks we have elected to office have no political clout as well.

**********

High School Football:

Anyone want to predict the local high school football teams outlooks for the upcoming season? I am a Notre Dame of Greenpond fan. I hope the Crusaders will win, but I don't think it is likely. Like to see them square up even if it is a scrimmage against Easton or P'burg.

**********

IRS Scam: Bernie, there is a scam going on about unpaid taxes owed to IRS that I got a call about this afternoon. The caller says he is from the treasury department. Don't believe me? Their NUMBER IS 1 713 609 1144. I called the FBI in Philadelphia who verified it. Driving folks crazy, I am told. - John Stoffa

**********

$400MM to Iran: That 400 million Obama gave to Iran as a ransom would come in handy for the people of Louisiana, and Mississippi right now.

Since everyone in the Lehigh Valley is a rabid right wing Trump supporter, why would they come here. Judging by letters to the editor and posts on this and other blogs, I can imagine with the crazy Breitbart guy that is now running Trump nation, the Trumpaholics must be like pigs in shat.

VOTE TRUMP!!A CAESAR FOR OUR TIME!!!!!

They may not come to the Lehigh valley as there are no elected dems in federal office from here, as for republicans the word is out that Dent is actively working against Trump. Maybe Hillary will come in and fundraise with Dent.

Kane has been found guilty, lets see if she will get any time in the big house, I doubt it, it would not look good to send a girl to jail. I suspect she will get probation, keep her pension, and get a job as a lobbyist or with some donors company.

If the floods in Louisiana had occurred in a "swing" state, do you think that Obama or Hillary would have rushed there?

Well, Hillary did call in her sympathies over the telephone. Obama teed up another round and sent some of his underlings.

Trump went there and helped hand out relief supplies.

Who do you think actually cares ?

The Clinton Foundation has announced that they would stop accepting foreign donations if Hillary were elected President.

Why did the foundation accept foreign donations when she was Senator and Secretary of State ? If it's not OK to contribute if she becomes President, why was it OK to contribute while she was Secretary of State or a United Sates Senator?

I suppose this announcement means that if you're a foreign government, and want to buy some influence with Hillary Clinton, they better contribute NOW before election day.

PA State boro code clarification request. Legal description of residency needed as referenced specifically in the municipal code..Section 801. A boro council member is selling his home..he is not in the house continuously and appears to be living elsewhere but not in his mostly by appearance vacant home in his ward of election. Thanks.

And if the above situation exists..is it cause to vacate his council seat?

Re: Keystone Collections,
It is absurd to hire an outside agency to collect taxes, but obviously someone got greased for that one.
The extra dollar is a processing fee can be eliminated if you use your bank account to pay the tax. The Commonwealth also has a convenience fee if you use a credit card to pay taxes, but no extra cost to use a bank account.
You probably got the "intent to pay" receipt because the transaction was not processed immediately.

8.07, is right on, if the floods had been in Florida, Ohio, or Pennsylvania, Obama, Hillary, and half the DNC would have there, but that is how it is, politicians are only interested in political advantage. It goes for both sides, Trump just beat them at their own game this time.

Maybe Pawlowski can get Hillary to come for a joint fundraiser, He should be able to get all his cronies to line up with cash. If Hillary gets elected she can pardon the whole bunch.

Ah yea. Sticky fingers has a very large following of sheep in his community. His. Application for ARD should not even be considered by Morganelli and the investigation should be extended. "Trump went there and helped hand out relief supplies. "
yep he broke the Ryan record at the soup kitchen/
trump handed out supplies for forty eight seconds.
hopefully the donald did not blister his tiny hands.
also
"Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards — a Democrat — told reporters this week he would discourage a presidential trip because law enforcement and rescue officials would have to be diverted to secure the visit.

"I would just as soon have those people engaged in the response rather than trying to secure the president," Edwards said"

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2016/08/19/donald-trump-louisiana-john-bel-edwards/88989070/

so trump decided to grandstand on the suffering of people in Louisiana in the hope of garnering political gain.

it is perfectly OK for a foundation to accept foreign donations.
what job Hillary was doing has No bearing on what the foundation does.
the announced change for the foundation is to prevent allegations of buying favor.
a reasonable course given the often scurrilous attacks on Hillary.
but i guess you are just foaming at the mouth over trump and his adviser pal with deep ties
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-ukraine-payments-manafort-20160819-story.html

"secret accounting documents of Ukraine's pro-Kremlin party were released Friday, purporting to show payments of $12.7 million earmarked for Paul Manafort, who resigned from his job as Donald Trump's campaign chairman following the revelations."

guess trump showed poor leadership skills by working with Manafort.
hey maybe the House will have a long series of hearings on the --naw he supports a republican so nothing to see here.

All you democrats making escuses for Hillary and Obama. Put the shoe on the other foot and think this is 2005. Remember Katrina, and how Bush was demonized for flying over Louisiana and Mississippi?

do you have a video conference before Katrina telling the President the levees would not hold?
and is FEMA run by a fired hose seller?
did the President claim his man was doing a "heck of a job"?
anything like that involving the current flooding?
trump spent 48 seconds moving supplies and getting a photo-op over the suffering of those fine folks in Louisiana.
trump tied up security people in Louisiana that could be helping instead of waltzing trump around.

"heck of a job brownie" appointed by bush.
http://www.usnews.com/news/the-report/articles/2015/08/28/hurricane-katrina-was-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-george-w-bush

"the president of the United States remained aloof from the disaster. Day after day, George W. Bush continued a long-planned vacation at his 1,600-acre Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas, and his staff didn't want to burden him with detailed information about the situation on the Gulf Coast. When Katrina made landfall, Bush had been on holiday at his ranch for 27 days, according to a tabulation kept by CBS News.

As the hurricane grew into a catastrophe, and as the nation watched the TV coverage in horror, Bush's aides decided they had to inform the president about it in stark terms. One of his aides put together a video showing scenes of hurricane-ravaged communities and showed it to the president."

so it seems bush was not really paying attention to Katrina.
or at least not watching FOX.

Fred Windish

Anonymous said...

The real story is the media. Non-stop attacks against Bush, but silence when their dark hero vacations while Louisiana drowns.

Anonymous said...

Trump inspires people with optimism and determination. Obama and Queen Hillary only have to offer depression and dependency. Better that they stay the hell away.

Anonymous said...

Donald Trump visited Louisiana. He brought with him a truck loaded with food, supplies, and toys that he personally passed out. He also donated money to a flood relief charity.

He went and walked flooded houses in a community. He didn't ask for state police or military security, I imagine he may have had his personal security with him but hey he pays them so not my business. He didn't ask for any road to be closed to bring him in or an escort to his destination, matter of fact he didn't inform the government of his visit at all.

He didn't care if the government knew he was coming, he just came and brought needing people needed supplies. And the news covered it about 15 seconds.

No matter of you agree with Trump politically, what he did was honorable and good, and he did it without making a big deal of himself. I hope more people of his statue will do the same in the same way, without all the hype of announcing their visit with intent of a public photo op.

Among men, Trump’s advantage dropped from 12 points to eight points. Among women, Clinton’s edge grew from five points to 12 points."

so if you want to say that trump is leading--to defeat i'd buy it

the press saw it for what it was a photo-op.

trump claimed "would be traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to “help people on the ground” in a “decidedly nonpolitical event” with “no press allowed.”

"As it turns out, though, there actually were members of the press allowed, and the candidate did use the occasion to attack his political opponent, and there were opportunities for photographs, but true to his word, Trump did “help out.” Pool cameras trailed Trump for his entire visit, and over the course of those several hours, Trump “helped out” by unloading a truckload of toys for 49 seconds.

After that, it was into the fire house, out the back door, and back to the Trump plane."

so yes he tried to help--his political campaign

Anonymous said...

@6:04 Powell did not have a server at his house or rely on outside contractors, as Hillary Clinton did at her home.

Also, the State Department inspector general report released in May said that Mr. Powell and other senior officials had used personal email accounts for official business, but that by the time Mrs. Clinton took office the rules were clear that using a private server in such a manner was neither allowed nor encouraged because of “significant security risks.”

where is Hillary blaming powell?

the original story was from 2006.
also
"Rudy Giuliani asked the former Massachusetts governor: "You did have illegal immigrants working at your mansion, didn't you?"
Romney's response was a flat, "No, I did not."

"Even nice guy Mike Huckabee has joined Giuliani, piling on after Romney criticized him over his plans to offer tuition breaks for children of illegal immigrants while serving as governor in Arkansas.

I believe she decided to use the private email server herself. She was well aware of the directives by the State Department against it, but did it anyway. These newly reported public facts may show her intent to violate the law.

What this means in real terms is that the FBI may re-open the criminal case against her. You see, Director Comey is largely disgraced in public for his decision and he may now have an opportunity to redeem himself, his reputation, and how he will be viewed in the history books about this period of corruption, lawlessness, and lawbreaking among government officials in America.

If you look at all the submissions for this week's Opinions Online, only one person has something to say, and that was to ask why both candidates have ignored the LV. Yet virtually all the comments here are about Trump, Clinton, Colin Powell, Democrats, Republicans, immigration, etc. Opinions Online is meant primarily for local matters, and especially those that I have not covered. While I certainly have no intention to ban comments about a presidential race, I get sick of reading the same things over and over from the same three or four people. Folks, there are numerous things going on locally. I really would like to hear about them.

are those attacks fair?
http://www.pensitoreview.com/2014/12/02/flashback-video-limbaugh-calls-chelsea-clinton-age-12-white-house-dog/
well one of the classic attacks was "pills" limbaugh.
"On Nov. 6, 1992, just days after Bill Clinton was elected president, Limbaugh, then 41, called Clinton’s 12-year-old daughter Chelsea “the White House dog.” (Some source say Chelsea was 13 at the time of Limbaugh’s insult but she was born on Feb. 27, 1980.) In 1988, eight years after the Carter administration, Limbaugh called Pres. Carter’s daughter Amy, then age 21, “the most unattractive presidential daughter in the history of the country.” Later he quipped that when he made that sweeping statement, he’d forgotten about Pres. Harry Truman’s daughter Margaret."

so the republican propaganda arm will go to extreme lengths to attack a political opponent.

All I know is Obama is the smartest and greatest President who ever lived and I knew this to true because the Lame Stream Media told me all about it in the run up to the first election back in 2008. The crease in Obama's pants was so perfect, remember? Mmm mmm mmm!

Eight years of the first woman President in history. Yeah! Lemme get some of that, Yo!!!

Campaigns doesn't spend money by accident. Their analytics likely show an already decided race for president among LV voters. My guess is that Hillary has this area locked up. Scranton and western PA may still be competitive, with energy sector and blue collar families more favorable to Trump. PA, overall is like Charlie Brown and Lucy and the football. Republicans always get the ball pulled out from them after dreaming of stealing PA. This year will be no different. Hillary by 10 in PA. And some Philly precincts will exceed 100% again in voter turnout. This still is your father's Pennsylvania.

Admit it, Bernie O'Hare --- all the Trump Bashing is designed to depress and suppress. You are are completely transparent. Now go cry to the Secret Service or something.

Hillary Clinton is the first government employee to use a private server, or to be caught using a private server, actually as many as 3 private servers, that were periodically destroyed and a new one used. This was done to bypass the freedom of information act for one, that is for sure, and any other illegal dealings, that may have not yet been proven. Just the fact that she bypassed the freedom of information act is illegal. The attempt to claim that using a private email account , which is legal, is the same as a private server is an attempt to hide the truth. It seems that most of the Democrats are willing to propagate this lie, which just goes to show their lack of principle.

I'm a Trumpkin. I don't see Bernie as helping Hillary or hurting Trump. No amount of debate changes the minds of those who have made up their mind on their candidate of choice.

Now to a local issue. It seems that the 2015 issues of parks being overused by car and bus loads of out of towners has been remedied. Kudos to those municipalities that stepped up to keep the parks from looking like third world countries on Mondays after heavy weekend use.

Keeping it local Bernie, I have been a staunch Dent supporter until his decision to essentially support Hillary in lieu of backing Trump. He and other Republicans are doing a huge disservice to their prior supporters as Trump is the only hope to preserve the US constitution & the country we cherish. Dent is throwing the Supreme Court into the hands of the liberal globalist agenda at the expense of national pride. Big mistake by Dent, Bush etc who have lost my support & respect.

Dirt Bikes in Allentown? Interested in knowing if any other reader's have noticed the illegal dirt bike motorcycles flying down main streets the last few weeks in Allentown. Spotted some of these clowns driving right down Lehigh St. at night with no lights on. The only way the police are catching these kids is with dirt bikes of their own or helicopters."

Glad you wrote about this. Yes dirt bikes are all over especially in Allentown parks trying to scare walkers and dogs. Nothing to stop them.

Good try Bernie for focusing on local issues. I looked and saw eighty some comments and thought - wow. Then I saw the national political pissing contest. Sad.
I am looking forward to your take on the Nazareth mayor, the Bethlehem Township continuing saga and other things.

"Trump is the only hope to preserve the US constitution & the country we cherish."
well it is not as bad as Gingrich thinking his job is to be the savior of Western Democracy.

"Dent is throwing the Supreme Court into the hands of the liberal globalist agenda at the expense of national pride."
liberal globalist agenda ?
nice word salad that sounds like everything that is not a republican talking point.

I will be at the polls handing out ABC cards. Anybody But Charlie. I am a lifelong republican and what dent did rattles me to the core. He - the establishment candidate must go. And I have been a dent supporter up until now. Bye bye Charlie

Amazing all the Hillary hate, yet most of the commenters probably aren't registered to vote, or won't vote at all

Weasel from Easton said...

At the end of the day I am really sad for the political process... People will complain and wait hours to vote for President when they won't at all for local township commissioners, supervisors or town council persons.... Local politicians effect your daily day to day life then a few president... SHAME ON ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ONLY VITE DURING A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Actually Bernie someone said this week there is not a single Republican campaign office anywhere in the valley. Is that true? The person that said this wanted to volunteer.

just watched ''Clinton Cash" on youtube

WOW - these people are even more corrupt than you thought.

Can't help but notice that Hillary Clinton only appears in front of hand picked audiences because her handlers know she is not very popular. This is probably why she's never come to the Lehigh Valley. Although I suppose it would be standing room only in her campaign office on Hamilton Street if she chose to do a meet and greet of her supporters.

What we see on television is that she has aged badly, and really doesn't look well. I'm sure that if she makes an appearance, they'll have to set up a stool and a pillow to prop her up on, or bring in a cushioned chair for her to sit to give her speech. I don't believe anyone wants her to fall or stumble, and possibly break her hip. Probably that's why she is always taking days off to rest between campaign stops.

to be expected from a Breitbart weenie.
and he had to retract several of his claims
"Peter Schweizer admitted he overreached in attacking Hillary Clinton's purported role in approving a Russian uranium deal and falsely claimed that then-Secretary of State Clinton "had veto power" to stop the Russian State Atomic Nuclear Agency from purchasing Uranium On"

and a review
"Ed Pilkington, writing for The Guardian, described the book as "an unrestrained attack on the former president and first lady." Pilkington notes that several of the claims in the book have been proven factually false. According to Pilkington, Schweizer does not prove corruption on the part of the Clintons, nor does he provide any evidence"

Clinton Cash is the usual bogus hit job by a conservative with a grudge.
the sad part is that they know they are lying but push their film anyway.

yep the lame attack on Hillary's health.
Hillary likes to rest up and let trump open his mouth and speak.
trump is a perfect example of a guy continuously stepping on his crank.
he deserves pity as all his life he was surrounded by people who agreed with him no matter how ridiculous he was.
it is a shock to him that in the real world he gets called on his bigotry,etc.etc.
so shed a tear and give tiny hands your vote if you want.

"but silence when their dark hero vacations"

"dark hero"

Well that says it all as far as the tea party Trumpaholics and their "core beliefs"

Bernie O'Hare said...

It's embarrassing to read such obvious bigotry. But this "dark hero", as he is called, if he has done nothing else, has erased a lot of the bigotry that would otherwise exist in our children. They have grown up the past eight years seeing a black man in a suit as President of the United States. I see the difference it has made in them as they have grown up, and am very hopeful for our youth. I am ashamed of my own selfish and hateful generation.

I wrote about a local issue and asked for a legal definition of residency as it pertains to State boro code. No answer.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Are you so lazy that you don't know how to use google and read the frickin' boro code yourself? I can't believe how lazy people like you have become.

I have a local question about how all the heroin money gets washed up clean.

Everyone is always talking about this epidemic and new programs, and awareness, but nobody ever mentions how all that money gets handled.

You do hear about arrests made of some dealers. But you never, ever, ever, hear about a local business or bank or intuition cleaning up all this immense amount of cash...I guess it just leaves town in the trunk of a car.

Anonymous said...

it is relatively easy to launder cash.
the mafia ran a bunch of pizza joints after all hoe do you prove how many pies were sold.
or the fictional walter white-own a car wash again how do you know how many cars were washed.
or simply fly the cash down to Columbia etc.
the plane operators get a percentage of the take.

Anonymous said...

I'm not lazy..I have a copy of the State boro code. Residency is not defined. Can you answer that simple question or not? I'm not asking for too much here.. just a definition.

I love how Depasquale used the term "dirtball" to describe the unauthorized dirty mailer. He liken it to sleezy politics. Wonder where this will lead? Is there a permit number on the presorted mail? Should there be?
