Donovan to Challenge Pawlowski ... As Independent

Former Allentown City council member Michael Donovan will challenge Mayor Edwin Pawlowski this Fall. Instead of running as a Democrat, he is seeking ballot access as an Independent.

Donovan is a professor at Cedar Crest, and is one of very few elected officials who was willing to engage people in the blogosphere.

His campaign announcement is scheduled for Tuesday April 9, Noon, at City Hall.

I'll have more to say then. For now, I'll just say, THANK GOD!

Well thats nice, he has one in a billion chance of winning. But that is nice.

He won't even get on the ballot. The election rules state that he needs to collect 10% of the total number of votes that the incumbent received in the previous election. That means that he needs well over 700 signatures. Also, is pro NIZ vote will destroy him in the anti-Pawlowski community. He is also living in the Ukraine for the summer months teaching. That is even more time away. He will be destroyed. I hope he knows what he is getting into.

Why don't you refer to Callahan as Jonathan or Panto as Salvatore? Seems like you are biased.

Councilman Donovan will win. When the full story on Water/Sewer sale are fully explained as a loss to City and Pay to Play to Pawlowski not only with this sale and the Arena project, plus other contracts. good bye King Eddie

If there where 4500 Signatures on Petitions oppossing the Water/Sewer lease. 700 signatures from Demos,Rep. and Ind.Registered voters among the 4500 that signed the Petitions will put Donovan on the fall ballot opposing current mayor. Plus if the 4500 vote in the generalelection with avoter turnout of 8000 or less. DONOVAN WINS.

He has no chance whatsoever to beat Pawlowski. Move on.

Rules did change for Indy candidates to get on ballot. He should be able to get enough signatures .

Good for Mike. I like him.

I bet you the Blog Mentor is rolling on the floor and foaming at the mouth on this one. HA!

And He quit the city council... why?

Anonymous said...

maybe he will get the Vixen vote

Not bad logic.Pawlowski will crash and burn eventually and if it happens this Summer,Donovan will still have a very difficult time getting more than a few hundred votes. This race is certainty one of 'The devil you know is better than the devil you don't' In this race any devil is possibly a finer candidate than the current Mayor

2:50, I've never hid my bias from anyone. I'd rather be honest than lie and pretend I'm neutral when I'm not. That is what is wrong with journalism. Nobody can honestly say he has no bias, but they are taught they have to be neutral. I'd argue they have to be fair, but would be doing us a good service b letting us t=know their leanings. The editors at the MC used to do that. I'd argue the entire staff at both papers should have such disclosures. I think I need to audit a class or two to really study how our current system has evolved from the yellow journalism we had before. The change is not all good.

Just another Democrat.

Spend, spend, spend.

Tax, tax, tax.

He's a Democrat yes but one with a conscience and a desire to do what's right. Give me that across the aisle any day and I'm ok.

I hope he's up for the campaign challenge, this one is going to be real ugly.

Will he ban fireworks at Coca Cola Park? Does he like the location of Coca Cola Park?

Oh yes, that's a much more important question than jamming the privatization of Allentown's water supply down the throats of its citizens.

I like Mike Donovan. But let's face it - he was for the NIZ before he was against it.

While he "hoped" for folks to do the "right" thing, he VOTED to let the NIZ go through. And we're about to find out how stupid that vote really was when the puck hits the ice.

Not only are the charges of corruption and insider dealings true, but this arena is destined, sadly, to be an abysmal failure. Predictions of traffic and parking nightmares, along with police presence issues, will be the story of the day in 2014. Get ready. And Donovan will have nothing to say except, "gee, when I voted for this thing, I really hoped everyone would just do the right thing."

He's either stupid or naive - neither is a great asset in a mayor.

And…in the event of a Donovan win…what happens to all the insider deals set up by Pawlowski and friends? Does the whole thing just implode??

Donovan was completely for the NIZ before he was against it.

No amount of revisionist history from O'Hare can change that, either.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Actually, Donovan supported a NIZ that used proceeds to take care of people, instead of developers.

O'Hare has been awfully quiet about the 144 teachers and administrators that were recently let go by the Allentown School District on account of a budget shortage.

Plenty of money to build a $ 177.1 million dollar Palace of Sport, though.

And, yeah, Donovan voted for the NIZ ...

Anon 11:21 has it right.

If only everyone (aside from Donovan, of course) would have just "done the right thing" with the NIZ.

Like give EVERYONE's wife a cushy consulting job worth six figures?

CITIZEN, PEOPLE's DEMOCRATIC CITY WITH NO SPENDING LIMITS

Will Donovan encourage the use of a large water user to take over the old Agere building?

Anonymous said...

How does the City of Allentown pay the Allentown School District's shortfall in their budget. Anon 11:42 am, when you let us know, you might want to write a book to let all the other school districts in Pennsylvania know so they can go sucking up to their local forms of government.

Hey, our old friend the guy who threatened the President is back on board.
Welcome back @ 11:44.

Rolf Oeler is now on both the mentor and BOH's fecal lists for that reason he cannot be taken seriously. Donovan was the head of a city council ethics committee and has a proven track record as a independent minded voice who will admit to past mistakes.

Snowball's chance...

1:38 - the earlier poster is probably referring to the state's decision to forgo some of its usual revenue to build privately owned buildings throughout the NIZ. This, while the state claims it cannot adequately fund state public education. Allentown can't do much directly to help fund ASD schools, of course.

The arena scheme will prove to be a near-total abuse of taxpayer monies. Some have hinted at coming revelations of illegal activities. I don't really expect that. I do think the stench of this whole "trick" will grow stronger, however.

As for Donovan, I believe he will always be a liberal at heart, despite whatever label he runs on. Allentown's liberal administrations have NOT been good for Allentown, and Pawlowski has led the charge to ruin. Therefore, ANYBODY BUT PAWLOWSKI (ABP) could well be an improvement.

If I'm Donovan, I don't focus on the NIZ.

I focus on Allentown's crime and poverty.

Donovan only has a chance of making a dent with a solid, practical tough on crime platform.

All of this NIZ greatness is lost because for most, Allentown reminds people of mid 1980s NYC.

He's a spending-addicted Democrat who used a misogynistic slur to describe Michelle Bachman, a Republican woman because he doesn't share views. No wonder Cedar Crest is nearly bankrupt, financially and morally. This guy is another flavor of Pawlowski, just more hair and a better speller.

Hey Tricia, take your meds! It was nice of you to drop by and spam this thread but it really won't change anything: you, your blog mentor, and King Palumpa Lump are going to get their butts handed to them in the very near future. Tune in to see ...

Mike Donovan is ETHICALLY superior to the INCUMBENTS running on the current DEM ticket, he will show a the MAINSTREAM media a thing or TWO about the TWO party SYSTEM!
