Cartwright on Gun Violence Task Force

Congressman Matt Cartwright whose District includes part of the Lehigh Valley, has been appointed to a Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. This task force, established by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, is tasked with developing a comprehensive set of policy proposals to reduce and prevent gun violence.

“We need to take a comprehensive approach to cut down on gun violence,” said Cartwright. “I look forward to serving on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and working to enact meaningful legislation that will help make our streets and communities safer.”

According to Easton Mayor Sal Panto, “This is a great opportunity not only for the Congressman to be in the forefront of this issue of national importance but also for Mayors and all Americans because Congressman Cartwright is a listener and cares about the people.”

A comprehensive set of policy proposals will be released by the task force in early February.

Hopefully, the proposals will include some legislation that involves mental health, rather than targeting legal gun ownership.

Do you really think the criminals will register or turn in their guns ??????

But we must Do Something(tm)

Yeah, libtards like Cartwright and Panto will scream and hollar. O'Hare has aq hard on for it becaue of his tiff with mezzaccappa.

Hey Sal, how many shootings in your hell hoe were by registered gun owners? Stop shifting the blame.

This is actually funny. I propose a committee to investigate the use of speech in this country. I propose to register all people that are about to say something that might be viewed as controversial. I proposes that they then receive a permit to be able to speak after a background and psychological testing.

Matt who?

Gun show loophole gets closed. That's it. The rest is just a kabuki dance. no assault weapons ban. Not even close. The end.

Here we go again, people sticking their heads in the sand to say guns are not the problem. Of course they aren’t. But the easy access to guns is part of the problem.

You are trying to make gun reform about the Second Amendment – it’s not. This issue is about gun reform. And of course you aren’t going to get guns out of the hands of all of the criminals but if we don’t try we are saying its okay.

We are asking for common sense reforms. For example, how can anyone feel it is okay in this day and age for an individual to walk into a gun show in 33 states and purchase a weapon without a background check? How many people feel that the mental health of an individual should be investigated as part of the background check? How many people think it is okay for a person who is on the NO FLY LIST to still be able to purchase a weapon or explosives?

People, these times require a different approach and simple common sense rules to help law enforcement do their job. And yes, this is just a start. The whole culture of violence should be re-evaluated. Our youth face it in TV, in the movies and on their songs. And yes, school security and security in all public places needs to be re-evaluated as well.

You can call me anything you want, you can say all of the disparaging things you want about me or our city, but we are doing something. Why don’t you also offer some solutions?

I call on the NRA and its members to take a leadership role in this important issue. I am more than happy to sit down with anyone to discuss this important issue intelligently. I don’t have the answers and I can admit when I am wrong, but the views voiced here are just words………help us do something positive to change the culture of vilence in this nation.

There are nowhere near enough votes to reinstate the so-called assault weapons ban. Check the DC blogs today. The political and legislative wrangling is over. Gun show loophole gets closed. That's it. Next issue.

I will support gun control legislation when "hunters" are put on the committees. Nearly 100 million gun owners in this country commit no crimes every day of the friggin year. Enforce the laws you have on the books. The rest should take care of itself.

I never owned a handgun until just a few years ago. I never had a license to carry until a few years ago. I know this much, if gun owners give in to the anti's as much as one little iota, we will lose all our rights as gun owners. Congress cannot be trusted. I now carry my gun everywhere it is legal to carry, and yes, I even have it in my coat pocket when attending church. I take it shopping, walking, to the movies, and to community meetings where it is legal. I will not hesitate to use it if I have to defend myself. Does this make me a bad guy? You would be shocked if you knew my identity.

9:58, That's a good thing, too, bc you probably don't act like an insaniac. You probably don't cut videos of people shooting guns, ending with the West Easton Boro web page. You probably don't post comments on the ET web site about shooting another person (me) in the skull with a hollow-tipped bullet. People who do these things should not be issued LTCFs. If they have them, they should be revoked.

I'm all for mental health evaluations BEFORE the issuance of a LTCF.

Make sure all judges are white and have big balls. Instead of giving light sentences or pleading to lower sentences just shoot all perps. Bullets are cheaper than jail and have far more lasting value.

Give all lawyers and college professors electric shock treatments until their minds are mush. Then send them to Idaho to pick potatoes

If you want to go soft put all white criminals in labor camps and rebuild our roads and bridges.

Shut down immigration. Open up deportation.Target blacks, asians, moslems,so caled latinos and anyone who can't speak English.

Make all school students wear uniforms.

Only ex military can be cops.

Do like Turkey - put a cop on each corner with an fully automatic weapon.

Using my solutions you can cut down on money for welfare, drugs, mental health, rehab and a bunch of other worthless social programs.AND MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT AGAIN.

These fools are not close to being social so eliminate them and then sterilize the parents before they breed again.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Panto how about the people who are on the no fly list unjustly? Government makes mistakes sometimes big ones. Now with that said if you eliminated the gang violence how would our gun murderer rate compare. Are the gang bangers going to listen to any law about weapons?

Bernie O'Hare said...

Why would you ask Easton's Mayor about the no fly list? What the Hell does he have to do with that? Seriously!

Anonymous said...

Panto stuck his libturd nose in the gun deabate and brought it up first. His city is an open sewer of unregistered gun viloence. His solution, go after the leagal gun owners.

That is why a guy like that could never be county executive., Stick to the city were that liberal bs will fly with the sheeple.

Bernie O'Hare said...

I stand corrected. Sal did bring it up. But I agree with him and think we should really try to find some common ground.

I'll agree that we need better security in schools. Will you agree to be rid of high-capacity magazines? I'll agree that you should be able to own an assault rifle. Will you agree to a thorough mental health background check?

Pleaase stop making this about you and mezzaccappa. What if a psycholoigist said she was fine, would you blieve it, no.

You are as nutty as she is. I read her post and she said, "if armaggedon came at her door". She made no mention of your name or that she was coming after you. She is obviously afraid of you. Based on the eway you and your fellow nuts constantly attack her, I can see why.

You have taken a serious issue and watered it down into a personal vendetta between you and an old woman friend. Christ O'Hare move on. Leave those of us who have legal weapons to live in peace.

Oh and take Panto with you.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Any rational person who read what she wrote would know she was referring to me. But you're not rational.

Please note - the first murder recorded in biblical history was not with a gun.

Jimmy Jones the preacher man took out his congregation with poisoned Kool Aid,

Recently, an apparent lottery winner was taken out by poison.

Yes indeed, with assault weapons more people including children can be taken out.

Some say we must address the problem of mental health as it relates to these mass murders. And I agree that we must. But the danger here is that the mental health issue takes a political turn and cha-bing --- the 2nd amendment is wiped out along with the 1st amendment. Hate to think that saying something the Commissars might disagree with would be regarded as a mental health issue. The Public re-education camps of the former Soviet Union, Cuba, Venezuela and other nations are filled with these mental health problems.

The closest empty U.S federal re-education center is nearby Schyukill Haven just waiting for customers.

"Section 21 . Right to Bear Arms
The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned."

Right out of the PA Constitution. The right to bear arms has been questioned enough in Pennsylvania. Time to stop. Enforce what is on the books. Up the penalties. Just today in the Morning Call, the fellow that recently shot NYPD officers was given his handgun by two or one straw purchasers. One of them is out on bail for gawd sakes!!!

It's obvious who was being referred to. You don't have to specifically name a person to have an implied threat. If her description had said, "He is 6'1" tall, black, likes to play basketball, and lives in a white house," it would describe millions of Americans, but I guarantee it would have gotten her a visit from the FBI.

Not a single murder in Easton this year.

FYI Jim Jones used firearms to go goad his people into drinking the Kool-Aid. It's important that both sides get your facts correct.
Bullshit and hyperbole on either side is still bullshit and hyperbole.

You cannot legally own assault rifle/select fire/full auto/now. Please, let's get it right.

If there is to be a discusion about what we can do as a country about gun violence we could start by looking at countries like Canada and Sweden that have less restrictive gun laws yet less violence. What we do not need is more pontificating about the need for useless laws by politicians only interested in feeding on fear to cash in on a few more votes (Can anyone say "Zombie Bath Salt law" here?).

At a quick glance it seems that a society which provides health care for those with a true need for phsycological help recieve it before a complete breakdown.

anon 8:09, has there been any unregistered gun violence in Easton in 2013? Think on it before you answer.

Notice how fast the NRA crowd goes to name calling like, "libtards"? Of course I think Glen Beck uses that term about every 76 seconds.

When the "Pro 2nd Amendment Crowd" uses personal insults, and slurs as their argument for assault rifles, it paints a picture of this being supported by the most chemically imbalanced Emotionally Disturbed Persons (EDPs).

You make us the rational, and sane gun owners all look like jesters with your idiotic and immature comments.

But what do I know? I'm a State Constable who in a few months will have an Applied Associates in Criminal Justice, and I received my varsity letter on the rifle team.

I guess since I support rational legislation since I understand the 9th Amendment and how it applies to interpretation to the 2nd Amendment (and as a constable the "militia" section directly applies to us).

Chances are now I'm a "libtard" for speaking the truth in their eyes. That is fine by me, unlike these shameful folks, I have actually studied the U.S. Constitution myself. I didn't just have talking points about it spoon-fed to me by Wayne LaPierre and low rated talk radio hosts.

Sal Panto, Jr. said...

Why do the individuals who use Anon as their name feel they have a right to be stupid? Call me, email me, come talk to me. I am not an unreasonable person. But to resort to name calling and the like is just stupid. It does nothing for your position on this issue.

Also, great post Spike and good luck on your Degree. That's a great achievement.

Bernie O'Hare said...

Spike, I second that. Good for you!

The name-calling is unfortunate. Bernie was called everything but his name by caring liberal Democrats who opposed his Gracedale stand. It is sufficient to argue that Sal Panto is well meaning, but unsuccessful in controlling violence in his city. His ideas regarding gun control are naive and misguided. It would be unwise for anybody to disarm while cities like Easton are still so very dangerous. Wilson used to be a nice place. easton's exported terror has ruined that once lovely borough. The crud creeps slowly. But it does creep. Just as Sal came after the suburbs' tax dollars. So too do urban criminals seeking to satisfy their habits. Go ahead and pass a hundred city-specific gun laws. They work so well in DC and Philly. but don't attempt to impose solutions to urban mismanagement on areas that don't require them. Keep in mind, the Obama administration has delivered a 40% reduction in gun prosecutions vs. Bush. It's time for Sal and Spike to demand our president properly administer laws currently on the books. More laws mean nothing if presidents like Obama won't prosecute offenders.

Anonymous said...

Spike, being a "constable" gives you no more rights under the second amendment than anyone else. "CONGRESS SHALL PASS NO LAW,.."

A constable, so what? Most constables like to drive old cop cars, dress up like dog the bounty hunter and should get a psychological evaluation.

The fact is "every" person is part of a free nations "militia" and there is no favored status under the second amendment.

Jim Jones used firearms to attack a U.S. Congressman and his invetigative group at an airport. Guns were not a major issue for the suicides Jones referred to as revolutionary suicides. Jones was a Fascist. But Jones himself died with a gun wound in the head. Over 900 people died

In the US 4,000 unborn babies are killed every day. Barely a tear. Brother do we have our priorities screwed up?

Bernie O'Hare said...

This post is about gun violence, not abortion. And I don't quite follow your logic. The fact that people are concerned about deaths caused by gun violence does not mean they should therefore necessarily be concerned about deaths caused by abortion. Not unless they think that those are innocent human lives. But if you insist on using abortion as an analogy, look at all the restrictions imposed on that practice. Look at all the continued attempt at banning it. I certainly respect your good will in wanting to stop this practice, and suggest you should respect the good will of those trying to stop the violence caused by guns.

J. SPIKE ROGAN said...

So "Dan the Man", are you saying all people with concealed carry licenses should also have to take a psych exam?

J. SPIKE ROGAN said...

Mayor Panto and Bernie,
Thank you both.

Anonymous said...

I am saying that any man on the street has the smae gun rights as a "constable". There is no special rights that go with being a constable. If people on the street must be evaluated before carrying a concealed weapo,n then every constable should also be evaluated.

Dan the Man!

I can carry a loaded firearm into any District Court, civilians can not. (So much for same legal rights). But thanks for thinking you could belittle me and marginalize me for daring not repeating NRA prepped talking points.

From Pennsylvania State Police at this link: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=4451&&PageID=462424&level=2&css=L2&mode=2

"Are there exceptions to carrying a firearm without a Pennsylvania License to Carry?

A License to Carry Firearms is issued to carry a firearm concealed on one’s person or in a vehicle within this Commonwealth. Any person who carries a firearm concealed on or about his person except in his place of abode or fixed place of business without a valid and lawfully issued license commits a felony of the third degree.

A person who is otherwise eligible to possess a valid license under this chapter but carries a firearm in any vehicle or any person who carries a firearm concealed on or about his person, except in his place of abode or fixed place of business, without a valid and lawfully issued license and has not committed any other criminal violation commits a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Listed below are exceptions as outlined in 18 Pa.C.S. § 6106. (2) (b) Exceptions:
1) Constables, sheriffs, prison or jail wardens, or their deputies, policemen of this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions, or other law-enforcement officers."

Seems like Dan is debunked.

Jim Jones had armed thugs around the inner and outer printers. Firearms played a significant role in intimidating people and forcing them to suicide at Jonestown. Not to mention the gun play at the airfield.
