David & Goliath

Last night, Northwest Bethlehem's Braves were on the road to play Lower Nazareth's A's in a little league game. Kids can play at that level at ages 11 and 12, although the Braves are predominately 10 year-olds.

I saw a big fellow in an A's uniform and thought he was one of the coaches. I thought wrong. This 6'3" athlete is the A's first baseman. He could fall and land on second. This pleasant boy, whose name is Kevin, is just 12 years old. You can see he has a slight height advantage on our second baseman, who is standing. Unfortunately for us, he also has a vicious swing.

After the game was over, his mom said she was taking up a collection so she could keep feeding him.

They both seem to like shades.

Bernie, is Kevin a righty or lefty? With that height and a lefty splitter, he could play in the majors into his 50s (or however old Jesse Orosco was when he finally packed it in). Get that kid an agent!

He's a righty.

Did anyone check his birth certificate? Seriously!

No, we believed him. He's a good boy, and his mom was very nice.

But it reminds me of The benchwarmers, where "Pedro" is called upon to produce his birth certificate, which is written with a crayon and a $100 bill.

Some of these "kids" are probably 16 years old. The honor system works here as well as in getting a drivers license.

I think leagues owe it to all the kids and parents go demand a "real" birth certificate.

If Mom or Dad says gee I think we lost it or "no habla iglesias". The answer is no play. simple and honest.

The Tock

This boy has had to produce his birth certificate several times. There was NO question about his age. Those were also his classmates on his team. he was a nice youg man and so was his mother. His father could be an NFL lineman.

Some kids are big. Some kids aren't. He should not be penalized bc he is tall.
